How Many Images Do You Shoot Per Week?
It’s time for another reader question.
How many images do you shoot per week?
I know it’ll be a little difficult to come up with an accurate figure (I have some weeks when it’s a lot and some when I have little time and take just a few) – but on average how many images would you take in a given week?
You might also like to share whether this is a consistent number of whether you shoot more at certain times of the year or when certain occasions come along.
If you are having trouble coming up with a figure – scroll back through your photo organizational software and see what you shot over the last few weeks to help you work it out.
Looking forward to seeing your answers and to total up how many shots we take as a community in a given week!

Roughly 150+/week.
September 3rd, 2007 at 11:07 am
per week? it all depends on what’s going on. on average, i would say i shoot about 200 shots when i go out for a day. according to my acctuation counter i’m at almost 5500 shots on a camera i’ve had for about 4 months.
September 3rd, 2007 at 11:09 am
I would guess at around 100 per week. I’ve been doing it long enough that storage is getting to be a problem.
September 3rd, 2007 at 11:16 am
depends how busy am i, and what i do, if i go to some event it take at least 500 – 1000 pics.
September 3rd, 2007 at 11:19 am
Heh, per session, around 100. I don’t take pictures all the time for the same reason I eat profiteroles only on occasion. Why ruin the buzz with excess. I’d get bored with profiteroles if I ate them all the time.
September 3rd, 2007 at 11:41 am
I have had my camera for roughly 2 and a half months and so have have clocked and today I reached image number 9544 so I’d say it’s about 80 to 100 per day, since I use it during my lunch break and when i walk home from work also before I go to work.talk about obsessive lol
September 3rd, 2007 at 11:46 am
On an average, it would be around 1000 since I’ve had my camera for roughly a year and I’ve shot 50,000 photos with it.
But I should mention that most of these photos were taken during travel so in reality, I only take about 300 – 400 photos per week.
September 3rd, 2007 at 11:48 am
Definitely hard to quantify. Week before last was probably about 30 or so. Last week was about 1200. Of course, most of them consist of playing with exposure, light, or composition. Ultimately though, I find that most of them suck and I settle for one or two reasonable shots in a day.
September 3rd, 2007 at 11:50 am
I find around holidays I take an average of 750 per week and during the rest of the year and average of 200 a week. But sometimes it can be around 50 when the weather isn’t good and I stay home more.

Holidays, family events, etc. I’ll shoot 200 a day. On a normal basis it’s more like 150-200 per week.
September 3rd, 2007 at 12:04 pm
ohman.
I shot 600 pics in one day once.
But I was a tourist that day. So.
September 3rd, 2007 at 12:19 pm
about 100-300 a week. During football and band season easily 300-750 depending on events.
September 3rd, 2007 at 12:22 pm
Well, like some of the others, it really all depends. Last week, we were on our first family vacation. I took 1200 pictures, 450 at one event. (Camden Yards is amazing!) Typically, I shoot around 100/week, but during the more mondane periods, my camera might not leave the bag for a while.
September 3rd, 2007 at 12:23 pm
I keep about 600-800 of the shots I make / month, and I keep about 1 in 4 I make. So that would be about 600-800/week. That rate has been pretty constant over the last 6 months.
September 3rd, 2007 at 12:31 pm
On a full day out shooting (exploring some random city) I can easily shoot 400-600
However I end up keeping a fraction, I think my average is about 100-200 keepers per week.
I tend to shoot a lot more in weekends.. with random shots fired in weekdays.
September 3rd, 2007 at 12:47 pm
As per the others who have replied, it fluctuates depending on the season and my mood. Averaging in the region of 150 with about 30% keepers.
Holidays and festivals, of course, blow this average sky high
September 3rd, 2007 at 1:05 pm
It’s difficult to say; if the weather is the way that I like it, and depending on the events on calendar, 1600 – 3200.
I really try to be disciplined about my first edit before creating a folder(s) for processing them.
September 3rd, 2007 at 1:15 pm
I take about 500 pictures a week. Mostly portraits!
September 3rd, 2007 at 1:31 pm
Well, in average there have been 800 shots a week since I got my D80 in October ‘06
So far 28.000 Pics in about 35 weeks.
September 3rd, 2007 at 1:34 pm
Wow… Do you save all of the photos or just the good ones? And where do you save them?
September 3rd, 2007 at 2:15 pm
On the average only a couple dozen. But a better question maybe should have been, “How many Pictures do you get in a week?” That is, how many on those images are you proud of and are usable? I still find that the figure that Mike Zabo, a photog for the Washington Post years ago had that number pegged pretty close. “One Picture a Day!”
September 3rd, 2007 at 3:00 pm
Probably on average around 200 a week, but if there are a few events then this can raise dramatically. I was over @ GC2007 a few weeks ago and then was in Wash DC for business. Added an extra 1000 images to my collection in just under 2 weeks !
Keeping up with post processing tho is a mammoth task !

September 3rd, 2007 at 3:08 pm
I have taken 20,000 a year for the past two years, but it really does vary week by week.
September 3rd, 2007 at 3:33 pm
I’m jealous, I only manage to shot 40 shots a month. I wish to have more time.
September 3rd, 2007 at 3:36 pm
Around 100 a week.
September 3rd, 2007 at 4:27 pm
Depends on what is going on for RIAT i shot 4500 shots
September 3rd, 2007 at 5:42 pm
Hm I would say between 200 and 1000 shots per week, depends on the time I got…
September 3rd, 2007 at 5:43 pm
Usually I shoot on “photo sessions” – whwn i have inspiration, time, or on speciall ocasions – and usually i shoot 100 – 300 photos per “session”. Though, i delete 2/3 of ‘em immediately after download from camera to computer. And i keep deleting “not-so-good” images time-to-time.
It’s about 15′000 shots i have made since end of July, 2006 in total.
September 3rd, 2007 at 5:55 pm
I’ve had my DSLR for half an year. I’ve shot a total of 8800 shots since then – that is about 365 per week. I’m keeping roughly a third of those which is about 130 per week.
September 3rd, 2007 at 6:08 pm
the answer to this question is an interesting one – I have had my Nikon d200 since Aug 06 and I am now on 32 000 pics. I did a scrapbook layout a while ago when I was on 22 000
http://www.designerdigitals.com/ddgallery/showphoto.php?photo=26407&ppuser=66
so at that stage I had done 94 photos a day for the past 78 months !
so in a week that totals = 658 ( try that for 32 weeks) !!!!!
September 3rd, 2007 at 6:10 pm
For the last year I had an average of 250 pictures per week, but that included some major events with 500 to 1000 pics/day.
Holidays and events excluded I should end up around 150 pics/week.

September 3rd, 2007 at 6:14 pm
between 50 and 100 shots, I guess.
September 3rd, 2007 at 7:01 pm
160 – 500
September 3rd, 2007 at 7:24 pm
Well let’s think : 4000 photos in 2 and a half monthes with my last camera, that’s 4000 photos in something like 10 weeks, so I’d say about 400 photos per week. Wow ! I’d never realized that was that much per week !
September 3rd, 2007 at 8:08 pm
My average is 225 per week for September 2006 – September 2007
September 3rd, 2007 at 8:22 pm
Per week over the last few months, it would easily be around 700 photographs. About two months ago I shot 4,500 in one week.
Thanks the digital-age, we can preview our work, shoot at 28 frames per second in sports-mode, and allow a LOT more errors – simply because we can view and delete on our computers.
The parabolic development of cameras and computers is making photography a lot easier for everyone.
September 3rd, 2007 at 8:36 pm
usualy Roughly 0-3
but When is wedding photography or phototrip it takes about 1000-2000 :)
September 3rd, 2007 at 8:39 pm
Some month there are only 100 per Week…
The last 3, 4 month I take more than 200 picture per week
September 3rd, 2007 at 9:23 pm
I usually shoot less than 60 times a week.
A few weeks ago, I shot 500 pictures in 24h, at a friend’s wedding, though. ;)
September 3rd, 2007 at 10:43 pm
around 80-100
September 3rd, 2007 at 11:00 pm
This year, 283.6 per week average. Surprising. I would have guessed lower, but I have been making an effort to get out shooting somewhere each week.
September 3rd, 2007 at 11:14 pm
I dont shoot wildly like a machine gun and hope something out of the hundreds of images works. I work like a sniper. I make sure each shot count. I come from the film days when each shot i waste means $ down the drain.
September 3rd, 2007 at 11:16 pm
I shoot about 20 to 80 shots a week right now It would be more but I am stuck to pretty much One day. I usedto be shott about 800 to 900 a week
September 3rd, 2007 at 11:30 pm
I usually shoot around 300 per week. This does vary depending on what and where I am shooting. In the studio I shoot far less, but in the filed I tend to shoot much more.
September 3rd, 2007 at 11:37 pm
Hallelujah! i am NOT alone!! ;-)
I am not sure how many per week but usually a DAY it is 150 or so. So…yeah. Lots.
Thank GOODNESS I don’t use film anymore. And THANK GOODNESS I have a blog so I don’t have to FILE them anywhere! ;-)
September 3rd, 2007 at 11:50 pm
I shoot roughly 100 a week, usually with members of our local photography group. I tend to publish on my web site http://picasaweb.google.com/BobEll69 just a much smaller number of my photos. Feel free to take a look at them. I always appreciate people’s feedback.
September 4th, 2007 at 12:27 am
200-250 per week. I work to many hours to shoot as much as I would like
September 4th, 2007 at 12:43 am
I’d say about 200 per week except during events when I can easily take 200-300 in one day.
September 4th, 2007 at 12:53 am
1500-2000 when I’m busy.
September 4th, 2007 at 12:55 am
hmm….hard to say, but I am taking around 500 pics per a week…
September 4th, 2007 at 1:13 am
well it seems with school and other activities I really on get to take about a couple dozen if that. But I find that I get a good number of keepers. When on trips or events I tend to take a few hundred in a couple of days. Not as many as some of you guys but it works for me
September 4th, 2007 at 1:21 am
I take between 10 and 500 pictures a week. Sometimes it’s just family stuff. Sometimes it’s a photography thing. My problem is keeping the ones I do take sorted and filed. Ah, the joys of digital film.
September 4th, 2007 at 1:44 am
Well, seems like the figures mentioned in this thread range from “modest” to “bragging” (grin). The nice thing about digital is virtually unlimited film, so these days we’re more inclined to keep the shutter rolling, especially in hopes of capturing “the money shot.” I think the follow-up question should be “out of all the shots you take per session, how many shots are used in your works?” Perhaps it would be easier to express this as a ratio or fraction. For me, about 1 out of every 30 shots I take get printed or posted to a blog. Then, some get the axe (like dupes and test shots) and the rest get archived.
September 4th, 2007 at 1:44 am
I shoot about 100 to 200 photo’s a week. I always carry a
camera with me. Most weekends it can increase to 300-400
easly. I always download them and put them on a CD for
future reference.
September 4th, 2007 at 1:45 am
Probably 100-200 per week average. But it tends to go in bursts. I went to the Cleveland National Air Show on Saturday and shot 1376 pictures in about 4 hours. When I go out to shoot something, I’ll typically shoot at least 200 or so just walking around. But most days, I don’t shoot any.
September 4th, 2007 at 1:47 am
I probably shoot 100-150 a week, but I don’t keep nearly that many.
September 4th, 2007 at 2:17 am
On average, 30-50 pictures per week. But, if I’m going somewhere interesting or cool – I’ve taken about 200 or so. Looks like I should catch up to the rest of you!
September 4th, 2007 at 2:18 am
Agree with most here that it is hard to quantify as there are events occurring that cause more pictures some weeks than others. If I was to average it out for the year I would guess between 150 – 200 Pictures per week. Kind of interesting how much Digital Photography has changed our willingness to shoot with more frequency and the need to develop (no pun intended) more efficient strategies for storing and protecting(from hardware failure or non-authorized use)our creative treasures.

I tend to shoot about 25-50 a week, for special events this could range from 100 to 200 shots if there is a lot going on.
For my shooting style I like to shoot about 6 shots of one image subject as I explore the different angles and ways of seeing the image. I also tend to try a plan a destination site once a week to capture some shots with a specific theme in mind.
Whenever I am on the road, as opposed to being on an errand, I always have my camera, flash and tripod with me.

tough question, if it’s any help at the weekend I covered a fete and a motorbike display and shot over 500 images in about two hours
September 4th, 2007 at 4:16 am
I probably take 100 to 200 per week but that depends on what is going on. They have been redoing the walls behind our houses so I have been photographing the progress. When I am around the grandkids the number goes WAY up!!
September 4th, 2007 at 4:18 am
Depends on the events. This week, it will probably be 300+ because of a concert. At a major festival next month, it might be 500-1000 per day for several days. Non-event times? Perhaps 100 per week.
September 4th, 2007 at 4:26 am
I also come from Film days. After more than 40 years of figuring the cost per photo, I still make every shot count. I take about 35 keepers per week. Here in Colombia there really is no seasonal differences with 18 holidays year round and no changes due to weather. Most of my shots are nature or family. I have flowers every day of the year.
September 4th, 2007 at 4:40 am
If I go out with the camera about 200 shots. If not about 30/40 tops. I tend to shoot in fits and starts, either lots at once or not for a while.
September 4th, 2007 at 4:42 am
In average I have shoot 200 per week over the last 6 month. And that – of course – changes a lot…
September 4th, 2007 at 5:01 am
Wow! I’m the piker here!!
I have had my XTi for 10 months and I just shot picture number 1900… That probably figures out to an average of around 175 per month / 40 plus per week. And – I’m retired… I gotta get going!!
September 4th, 2007 at 9:06 am
…..206!
September 4th, 2007 at 11:13 am
I’ve had my D200 for 37 weeks and I’m at about 27000 clicks, so I’m averaging 730 per week. Wow.
September 4th, 2007 at 12:01 pm
This week has been unusual case we are taking our vacation but I should say about 300.
September 4th, 2007 at 12:43 pm
A light week… ~ 300/week
A heavy week… 1000+
September 4th, 2007 at 5:04 pm
250 or so.
September 4th, 2007 at 6:08 pm
Last week I shot almost 2,000 pictures. That is for a Rotaract Conference. And also Malaysia International Fireworks Competition. On average around 50-100 pictures a week.
Some fireworks pictures

Well, I sure wish I had time to shoot sooooo many photos a week. I might get a little better at it. Anyway I try to take photos whenever I can, so maybe about 200. I reckon when the christams holidays come it will trebble. :)
September 4th, 2007 at 7:38 pm
Probably for typical weeks about 20 or 30 of just random shots when not much is occuring.
Having said that I just got back from a trip across the western states of the USA in which I took an average of 800 shots a week!
September 4th, 2007 at 8:44 pm
Last week about 500, on an average… close to 60 a week.
September 4th, 2007 at 9:00 pm
On average, I’d say 100-200 per week. Obviously it is significantly higher some weeks, and not at all on other weeks.
September 4th, 2007 at 10:28 pm
about 200-500 depending whats going on
back to school i took 200 the first day
all those new preschoolers and kindergardenters who are sooo cute
September 4th, 2007 at 10:59 pm
Most days I will have the camera charged and ready to go. It isnt a matter of how many photos do I take each week, but rather how many can I take before the batteries need recharging. (I have two sets). This past weekend for example I went to an event here in Arkansas. The annual National Chuck Wagon Championship, held in Clinton Arkansas. I narrowed the “keepers” down to 126 or so. They are available to view on my webshots page. http://community.webshots.com/user/amateurphotographer2
All that I can say is it takes a “special” breed of human to make a horse run full steam up a hill knowing you are going to come back down it in a cloud of dust (and bruises).
September 4th, 2007 at 11:43 pm
Knowing that I have had my camera since December 2006 and I have over 12000 actuations I average about 300 shots per week. However, that number is slightly skewed because I have shot some events that have racked up the number of shots so I would say that on an average week I would actually shoot more like 75 – 100.
September 4th, 2007 at 11:57 pm
If by simply calculating the numbering sequence of my photos divided by the the 8 months I’ve had my XTi, my average is 150 photos per week. The reality is some times I use it a lot, some very little. My average would be biased by the last two weeks events which include a vacation and a car show that account for 900 pictures.
September 5th, 2007 at 12:07 am
this obviously depends how many events i have going on. for most events, we shoot about 2500 per camera for the 2 S5 Pros or 2 D2x/D200’s.
for example, for a wedding, the average is 2500 exposures for each of the 2 S5’s, for a total of 5000 for the event. it would be about the same for a sporting event, for each of the two D2x’s.
for one event a week, the total is 5,000. if i have two events, the total goes to 10,000.
regards, michael
September 5th, 2007 at 3:22 am
While “at home” I usually only take about 25 or so per week, but when traveling, the number jumps up to about 700 or 800 per week. So many photos, so little time…
September 5th, 2007 at 4:33 am
I shoot an average of 150 – 300 shots per session since going digital last year. In the past year (all digital) I shot about 11,000 frames, which compares to only 8,000 frames shot in my previous 30 years of shooting film. The ablity to rip off a few frames and ’see what happens’ has to be one of the biggest upside to digital.
September 5th, 2007 at 5:05 am
I shoot on the order of 100-200 per session, and most weeks I shoot one or two sessions. That leaves me at approximately 600-1200 images per month on average. That has held true for the last year, so I think it’s pretty accurate.
The number I actually show anyone is a lot lower however. ;)
September 5th, 2007 at 7:27 am
I’m not sure what the typical week totals to, but I’ve averaged 180 shots/week.
September 5th, 2007 at 11:24 am
My average since getting into digital photography is 250 per week. This comes from many weeks of shooting nothing, and vacation weeks of shooting 2,500 per vacation.
September 5th, 2007 at 1:03 pm
I typically take 100 to 150 a week.
September 5th, 2007 at 2:34 pm
I thought I shot a lot but compared to some of these people, I am true piker!!!! Oh well, my average is 308 per week – so far. Like everyone else, it depends on the occasion and there are those times when I let the camera sit and wait for days at a time. Other times, I wind up changing batteries a couple times in a day. Just depends on what is going on.
September 6th, 2007 at 6:20 am
Much less than the folks here. In the last year with my D50, I think I’ve added about 2,500 shutter actuations. Sometimes, I’m just shooting a lot of images, hoping that a few come out, but most of the time, I’m trying to get the shot through careful deliberation.
September 6th, 2007 at 7:06 am
I take from 100 to 300 very often for vacations, birthdays, holidays and other family functions. I delete a lot. Some are short movies. An average week I might take 30 on a weekly trip or 90 of flowers or events as a volunteer.
September 7th, 2007 at 9:44 am
I’m an artisan jewelry designer, so I take macro pictures (mainly) of all my creations. So, it all depends how many jewelry items I make each week, but on average, I take around 100 to 200 shots per week.
My old camera died about a month ago (and trust me there is a huge difference between the pictures shot with the old camera and my new Canon S3 – thanks to this site here, I was able to make an informed decision on which new camera to buy and I LOVE it).
I appreciate all the tips and information here very much.
Cheers!
September 7th, 2007 at 10:52 am
2000 images per week on average…
September 7th, 2007 at 11:05 am
I shoot mainly meetings, seminars and conferences for the company I work for. I shoot around 50-75 a week average.
This fall it will be in the neighborhood of 500 a week.
Chrismas is another story altogether.
shakey
September 7th, 2007 at 3:20 pm
My average seems to be about 120 shots/week, but that varies also lot. There are weeks like this week when I don’t touch camera at all and then if I’m shooting some sports or similar event, it can easily be over 1000 shots during one weekend.
September 7th, 2007 at 6:59 pm
Depends if I have a planned shoot or not.
On a planned shoot, I can easily take up to 300 pics. One particular shoot I had 1400 pics. For my everyday life, I’d say maybe 40-50 shots/week, depending on where I’m going & what I’m doing.
September 8th, 2007 at 1:57 am
Once a week I make a camera safari, on weekend, and take up about 150 to 200 pics.
September 8th, 2007 at 5:05 am
I read the first post that someone took 2900 photos in a week or over 400 frames a day. Unless I am covering an event, such as an auto race, for a client I never overshoot. When I am shooting a subject for artistic purposes I generally shoot about 20 frames, sometimes as many as 30, but that is rare.
Like John K says in his post, “I shoot like a sniper.” I started shooting as a kid in the 50s using a Brownie box camera and though I still use 35 mm and 120mm cameras sometimes, I shoot almost exclusively digital these days but film was expensive and we were taught to make each shot count — A philosophy I have carried into digital. Thinking about each shot before you click the shutter and limiting the number of frames shot, I think, makes you a better photographer (and it saves you a lot of time later when you download to the computer!).
September 8th, 2007 at 7:11 am
I am near the end of Project 365 which means that I take quite a few pictures each day. I am only new to photography so I do heaps of experimenting as well. I would say that over this period I would have taken approx 400 per week, which includes weeks where I have taken heaps due to holidays, events etc. When I finish the project I suspect that the amount will probably fall dramatically as I wont be taking pictures everyday.
September 8th, 2007 at 2:12 pm
I shoot about 1,200 I do a lot of sports. I have worn out a shutter in less than a year. Thank goodness it was still under warranty. I have since up graded my camera and keep a back up.
September 9th, 2007 at 12:43 pm
peterd is right about saving lots of time when you download if you only take a few…but I probably average about 300 every day I am off and that is about 4 days a week, so I’m guessing about 1200 for me, give or take a few hundred. I just have to do a lot of sorting & deleting, but I am learning as I do. One of these days I hope to ’shoot like a sniper’, too!

It depends, i use it only in weekends, and i take about 200-250, i reduce considerable, the number of shots that i take when i move to RAW, now i prefer think more and shot less.
Sometimes in events, like sports, partys, etc.. usually that number can increase to 800 shots per event

Around 600-700 a week and by my standards I get around 200-300 really excellent ones.

I would say 200+ a week.
When I’m surrounded by friends and family I shoot the whole day and shoot maybe 300+ a day…but when I’m alone it’s just my project365-stuff!

About 200 to 400 a week. Here in Iowa each season brings soo much change of weather and scenery, so normally the weeks in January, March, June, and October are when I can get up to about 600 a week without any problem at all. But like many other photographers, the number from week to week varies for me too.

I take approximately 100+ a week. Mainly on the weekends. More on special days and vacations. Always looking for a different angles and out of the norm items.

I have two GREAT cameras, Canon S3IS (nt SLR) and Sony Ericcson K810i (mobile)… i used to take minimum 100 pictures everyday with both weapons for my stories… Because i am providing pics also for my stories in newspaper where i am workin. Hwever, i will get min 10 best pics (so called) everyday, my editor will pick 5 out of that ten and atlast one pic will publish along wit my story, always offbeat stuffs… Nw my dream is to buy a new DSLR which can shoot min 10pic at a second like a machine gun… Soon very sooon, hopefully i will buy that…

Hmmm… Well, during the holidays/event season, probably a couple thousand a week. When I go out for a day of shooting for the purpose of it, probably 600-700?
It really ranges, but since May 2001 when I got my very first digital camera, I’ve probably taken about 200,000 total. Maybe more.

Generally on a full days shoot I would take between 400 – 800 shots. I do auto bracket quite a bit so some of those would be duplicates. The most I have ever shot is probably 1500 in a day whilst travelling..

I average about 500-600 a week. Maybe 20-30 keepers a YEAR. “Keepers” meaning stuff I would be really proud to print in a book, etc. Other stuff I have started deleting if it’s not perfect in my eyes.

In the past year I average pretty close to 200 shots a week. My record for a single day is around 630 shots.
I hope I can keep close to 200/wk. or I haven’t picked up the camera enough that week. :)

On average i shoot anywhere between 400-900 images a day, but i am also doing freelance news work for the AP, and unlike you average point and shoot shutterbug most of my photos are professional, i just put a sony camera in its grave and i had it for 9 months with actuations around 125,000
When I am doing modeling photography I shoot anywhere between 400-600 shots per shoot, most never see the light of day but well
On a recent mill explosion i covered i shot somewhere between 1200-1600 before the fire was completely out, and the demo which happened over 2 days later was around 1000 for two days work!
I think i get so many pics because i get paid so much for them (AP pays on average 300-500 a picture!)
Hope this helps
