Fujifilm F30 and F40

Two… not counting the cheap, low res one in my mobile, which doesn’t give any easy way to extract the pictures taken.
September 11th, 2009 at 12:52 am
Five, also not counting several cell phones. I still have 3 of them. Sold my Canon Rebel when I got the 40D, still have my first Digital, a Fuji. Gave my Canon pocket camera to an aspiring 11 year old photographer, and bought a G10 for myself. Now I’m waiting for the 60D to come out and this time I’ll probably keep the 40D as a backup (Many times I’ve kicked myself for selling the Rebel).

I purchased my first digital camera back in 1998. I seem to recall it was a Ricoh brand, although I don’t remember the model number. I do remember the maximum resolution of the pictures it took was 128 Kb and it had a funny flip cover that hid the LCD screen to preview the photos taken. Having been a photographer since 1984, to me this was the pinnacle of instant gratification: no more waiting for film to be developed and printed. Since then, I’ve owned several digital point-and-shoot cameras and a few DSLRs, the latest one being my most favorite, the Canon EOS 5D Mark II.
September 11th, 2009 at 12:56 am
My first was a crappy, fixed focus Fuji that I bought at the dawn of digital photography, then my Konica Z5, PowerShot S5IS and now my 450D.
Steadily moving up the photographic food chain. I wonder how long I can hold out before I get a FF DSLR?
September 11th, 2009 at 1:08 am
Two — my first digital was a Sony pocket cam. I kept it until it died a horrible death (sand in the lens extension motors — yikes!), and then upgraded to a DSLR.
But the thing is — I really do miss my old pocket cam sometimes. It was SO easy to take along with me, in my pocket or backpack, without adding basically any weight or bulk. Plus, the old thing took decently good photos, it was just slower.
September 11th, 2009 at 1:08 am
5 total, 3 Canon DSLRs, a Canon Point and Shoot, and a Kodak Point and Shoot from 1998 :) (Grandparents wanted lots of pictures of their first grand child, so we went digital and haven’t really looked back).
September 11th, 2009 at 1:09 am
4 – Counting my iPhone as I do use that a fair amount of the time to catch those photos when I don’t have one of the other 3.
September 11th, 2009 at 1:16 am
I do seem to be going backwards and going from digital to several ageing 120 film cameras …
September 11th, 2009 at 1:38 am
One, a Powershot A520 that I have been using since 2005.
BTW, is there a special script or plugin necessary for voting? I can select a button but not click on “submit” or “vote.”
September 11th, 2009 at 1:38 am
I actually had more than 3. But it’s shared, so I voted 3.

6. Still have all of them and they all still work for the most part…regularly use 5 of them. (perhaps I have a problem?) =)
September 11th, 2009 at 2:14 am
I’ll stick with just the Canon Brand
A540
then S3IS
then Rebel XT #1 (sold)
then Rebel XT #2 (sold)
then 40D #1 (Stolen)
then 40D #2 (still have)
then 5D (still have)
then PowerShot D10 (great P&S)
then 20D (bought for son in Korea. It’s in the mail to him now)
Nothing new in the plans now. I’m waiting for a camera with all of the features of the new 7D but with a full frame sensor instead of crop sensor.
September 11th, 2009 at 2:15 am

When I bought by wife her Nikon Coolpix camera, I was shooting with a Nikon 6006 35mm, thinking I would stay with film. But after two years, I finally bought a Nikon D90.

Regarding the Poll: I have had 7 cameras because I started with one that wasn’t even 1 megapixel, and have moved up to better ones. I only have 3 that I use now – 2 DSLRs and 1 good point-and-shoot to carry around.
September 11th, 2009 at 3:29 am
Sony DSC-F717 (sold)
Nikon D70 (sold)
Nikon D300 (current)
September 11th, 2009 at 3:32 am
I’m up to seven (yikes, maybe that’s showing my age a bit).
4 compacts, 1 bridge, 2 dSLRs – and a partridge in a pear tree!
My first was a compact 2MP Olympus C120 in 2001/2002. That was followed by a compact 4MP Canon IXUS 400 in 2004. Next up was a compact 6MP Canon IXUS 800 in 2006 (which I still own and use). My newest compact camera is a Panasonic TZ7 which I carry when I don’t have room for my dSLR.
I owned a Panasonic FZ28 for a time before taking the leap to dSLR with a Nikon D40. I still own that but I now also have a D90.
So I still own 4/7 digital cameras that I’ve bought – I think that’s a pretty good success rate.
not long after digital arrived on the scene. After that was a compact
September 11th, 2009 at 3:32 am
Four.
The first was a Kodak DC260 that we rescued from the refuse bin of a non-profit my wife worked for. The camera had stopped working and the quote the organization had gotten to fix it was more than the camera had originally cost. We found an authorized repair near us and paid $170 to get it patched up (about 1/3 of the original repair estimate!?). The camera ate batteries, but it was a joy to be able to take photos without worrying about paying to print all the duds.
Then an Olympus Stylus 410, recommended by a pro photographer friend. A very nice camera. Battery life was good enough that photo safaris were now pleasant.
After that was an Olympus SP500-UZ, for a longer zoom and faster shots.
And currently a Panasonic DMC FZ-18, again for a longer zoom and faster shots.
September 11th, 2009 at 3:38 am
My first was a Nikon D70. Moved up to a D80 and then added a D300. Gave the D70 and lens to a brother, encourage my wife to use the D80, and added a second D300 to my camera bag. Lots of weight, yes but missing shots while changing a lens can be a pain. I keep the 80-400VR on one body and the 18-200VR on the second. Oh yes, there is the Fuji compact, but I can’t remember the last time we actually used it.
September 11th, 2009 at 3:43 am
Fujifilm FinePix 2650 [2004-10 / 2005-07]
Fujifilm FinePix A345 [2005-08 / 2006-08]
Canon PowerShot A620 [2006-08 / Present]
Canon Rebel XTi [2007-08 / Present]
Canon PowerShot SD790IS [2009-03 / Present]
I’ve used all of these cameras extensively. The first two broke. The last three work. I don’t use the A620 anymore. I use only the XTi with two low-end lenses, or the SD790IS when the DSLR is inconvenient.
September 11th, 2009 at 3:45 am
I have one right now (my lovely W55 point and shoot), but I’ll have a T1i… soon :)
(I voted ‘one’)
September 11th, 2009 at 4:01 am
I want to change my total to 5 not 4. Started off with Fuji 401, which we broke and replaced with almost identical cheaper but plastic bodied Fuji. A Canon Powershot which was really my son’s but I borrowed frequently as I loved the flippy swivelly screen – while dancing and gesticulating wildly he sent it flying out of my hands. Replaced that with a Canon Powershot 630 which we still have but am also using an Ixus 50. I use the A630 as my handbag cam – not usually without it but now have a Canon D40 which I take thousands of shots with – not because I am totally snap happy (though there is an element of that) but because I keep altering aperture, exposure, ISO to see what happens. It’s my joy! I joined this site so I could gain the knowledge I need to process photos as I am totally a computerilliterata – despite trying – but also to improve my eye – I know what I like and I have to work out how to reproduce a similar style to the things do. I am now taking holiday shots of parts of fountains or reflections. I have to be quick as hub is usually half a mile ahead of me so I snap and run sometimes too.
Does anyone ever say thank you to Darren and all the mods for their efforts? I hope so – and here’s mine – thanks!
September 11th, 2009 at 4:40 am
Started with Canon DIGITAL IXUS,
upgraded to Canon PowerShot G3 (to get Av, Tv, M, …),
bought Canon EOS 20D (first dSLR) and
then Canon EOS 40D (as 2nd body).
I still own all of these, even though I loaned IXUS to my parents for couple years.
September 11th, 2009 at 4:41 am
My 1st camera Nikon D200, 2nd D300 and 3rd Nikon D70s.
September 11th, 2009 at 4:50 am
i think pls exclude which camera that you all already sold or stolen….which mean how many you have now
September 11th, 2009 at 4:54 am
All Canon here. Started with an A80 years ago, fell out of my pocket at a wedding and replaced with an S3 IS. Picked up a SD630 for a trip and then finally got to a real camera with my XSi. Now I’m just itching to save up enough for the 5D mk ii (w/24-105L of course) :)
September 11th, 2009 at 5:31 am
My first digital was a Canon A20, which was stolen by movers. 2nd was a Canon S3 IS. It started doing three shots per click on its own in every mode but full auto… I replaced it with a Canon S5 IS, and my wife has the S3 IS; she doesn’t care about the other modes anyway.

Too many point and shoots to mention……. currently the Olympus Tough something or other that’s with me all the time, Canon G10 that I’m still coming to grips with and the Canon 450D that is my pride and joy! So many lenses I’ve lost count! lol
I think I’m what’s known as a collector!
Was hoping to sell the 450D and move on to the 7D but from what I’ve been told the price will be…….. *Gulp*…… that will be a fair while from now….
September 11th, 2009 at 9:28 am

2. Sony 220 (little point and shoot – red!)
3. Nikon D70
4. Canon G9
5 Nikon D300
You know – I hauled out the Sony 505v a while ago and was blown away by the 3 megapixel pictures it took.
The color and resolution was amazing…and the battery still recharges and the camera still works.
September 11th, 2009 at 9:32 am
I never owned a digital point-and-shoot. The Nikon D40 was my very first digital SLR and I loved it. My husband uses it now. The Nikon D80 is what I’m shooting with these days but on my wishlist is… the Nikon D300!
September 11th, 2009 at 9:33 am
Eleven in all, from my first one, a really horrible little Ricoh that I took photos for Power Point Presentations, employee ID badges, and such. To improve on it I bought a few other bad ones that were just a little bit betterwith each purchase.
Then I bought a Kodak 5000 to use at work. It was awesome, wonderful color, easy to use, a big robust, weather proof, mans camera. I took over a thousand photos the first week I had it, at that point I realized just how good Digital was going to be.
I now carry a Sony Cyber Shot DSC-290 on my belt as a walking around quick draw, Point and Shoot camera, Plus as my main camera, my Nikon D80 is powerfull camera that is a pleasure to use.
Just could not be any more satisfied.
However; to corrupt a famous photography quote “my favorite camera is the next one I buy”
September 11th, 2009 at 9:37 am
I have a Canon Powershot, Canon Rebel XT, and a Canon 50D. I still have and use them all. I almost forgot, my very first digital was an Olympus…about 15 years ago.

3. Panasonic DMC F8, 7 MP

I still have all my cameras.
I use the Nikon D5000 for most things now, but I have the IXUS with me all the time (it fits in my pocket) just in case I see something worth shooting.

Well, let’s see…
My first one was an Apple QuickTake. Wow, eight images before you had to download the 2MB card to your computer…
The next was a Sony Mavica. Floppy disk storage. No viewfinder. Pretty useless…
Third was my Canon EOS 350D
and, finally, last but not least…
Canon EOS 400D
September 11th, 2009 at 10:06 am
Powershot S50 which i believe i still have but don’t use
IXUS 850TI or something i had but sold to my ex when we split
Canon EOS 400D – Current camera
September 11th, 2009 at 10:09 am
I mis-voted. I said I had one, but I just got my 2nd Fujifilm, an s1500 to replace the s700 that I wore out! My first Fuji has taken the abuse of a lot of travel and about 15,000 shots over 2 years without a problem and gave pretty good results. So I simply replaced it. I usually don’t have time to compose and think about a shot and this way I can just shoot and move on without missing the rest of the action.

September 11th, 2009 at 10:53 am
the story so far:
cheap VGA camera, not sure the brand – 11 shots, no viewfinder
Hewlett Packard Photosmart (2MP) – decent photos, including a fake tilt-shift recently published, terrible on AA’s
Kodak LS443 (4MP) – small tripod, able to do long exposures, great battery life
Kodak DX7590 (5MP) – a prosumer made me desire a dSLR
Canon 400D (10MP) – 300k + photos, still at my parent’s house as backup
Canon 50D (15MP) – great camera, but can’t figure out why everything else in canon’s lineup has video but this!
to be continued… ;-)
September 11th, 2009 at 11:01 am
I have owned 3 early Fuj models, one Olympus and 6 Canons: 2 x SD1000IS, SX10IS, Digital Rebel, Digital Rebel XT and EOS40D. Il still own all the Canons, the digital SLRs being the ones I use most. The small point & shoots are mainly for easy portability on business trips.

September 11th, 2009 at 11:16 am
First one: Sony Mavica (without the memory card) then another Sony Mavica with the memory card capability and I still use that one at work for student pictures, because our computer have floppy drives. Then a small Sony point and shoot, then a Nikon point and shoot and then a Sony H5 which I still have cause it takes great pictures and my camera to date is a Nikon D60. I’d like to upgrade to a D300, but Im waiting for the price to go down.
September 11th, 2009 at 11:22 am

3 Nikons – the last one was the D-90 kit from Costco – not the right lenses for my style of shooting
Canon SX200IS – my finger kept covering the pop-up flash – returned it – drove me crazy
Canon 5D Mark II – my current god
Panasonic Lumix – good, but couldn’t change lenses
Canon G10 – my favorite travel companion, and always in my briefcase, 15MP & Macro
September 11th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
Olympus C1400 in 1998 (was considered huge as it had 1.4 mg) However it was obviously a good sensor and good glass.
Olympus 3040 – 3.4 mg about 2002
Canon 20D – October 2004
Canon 5D – November 2006
plus a Ricoh point and shoot waste of time
Canon G9 – Great walkabout camera when not convenient to take a DSLR
Still use the 5D and 20D. Will replace 20D with either a %d Mk ll or maybe a 7D.
September 11th, 2009 at 12:07 pm

Canon Rebel XTI
September 11th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
1) 1.3MP HP something… Took horrible pictures and ate batteries like candy! I have no idea where it is now.
2) 3.2MB Fuji FinePix S3000 (I think). The auto-focus system on it was infuriating in low light. The lens extend & retract mechanism eventually broke.
3) Canon PowerShot G10. I still have this camera and I still love it! It is currently my “take every where” camera.
4) Canon EOS 50D. This is currently my work horse camera and I love it!
5) Canon EOS 30D. I bought this camera second hand (used). I needed it as a second body for my live performance photography. I found it too inconvenient switching lenses during live performances so when a friend of mine decided to sell her 30D (at a good price) I bought it. Since then, it’s made life a whole lot easier because now during live performances I just carry two cameras with my two many lenses attached.

@din brasco: How many digital cameras we currently own is a different question from what Darren asked. I’d guess for most of us, it would only be one or two.
Btw, when people speak of “point and shoot” cameras, what does that mean? Is it a bare bones, full-auto only. fixed lens camera, or is it a broader term essentially meaning “not a DSLR?” When I read that, I think of the old basic film cameras where you had no control over the camera’s settings. My S5 IS (and many others), otoh, in addition to the full-auto mode, has full manual and many things in between. Main difference between it and a DSLR is the ability to change lenses. So I’d hardly call it a “point and shoot,” but what would such cameras be called?
September 11th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
Canon Elph (the original model)
Nikon Coolpix something or other–my first upgrade
Another Canon Elph–about four years old now, but I still carry it in my purse
Another Canon whose model name escapes me–bigger than an Elph, with more options, but not BIG. I actually got it and the Elph at the same time because together they were still cheaper than a DSLR.
Nikon D40 … and then, of course, I caved and got a DSLR. And yes, I’d love to upgrade it, too, but can’t afford it!
(I see now that this is actually five cameras, and I checked off four on the poll. Apparently I can’t count.)
September 11th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
1. Fuji 3800 (loved it!)

I had a Sony 2 megapixel model for about 3 months. It died in the middle of a trip to Hawaii and Sony wanted more than I had paid for it to fix, and I bought it at Target and they didnt give a shit. I spray painted it blue and made it a paperweight. Then I got one of my absolute favorite cameras, the Nikon Coolpix 4500. It was this camera that showed me the potential of digital photography as a medium. I still have some very nice files from that camera that I print from time to time. I graduated after about a year to the (then) new Nikon D70. That is a camera I wish I still owned. It was a great piece of equipment. Lots of fun to use and made great images. I still have the terrific kit lens that came with. The next year I went up to a D200, and it was a let down from the D70. I just didnt like the quality of the images that came out of that camera, and didnt have a good feel about it. About 6 months later, I got my hands on a D300 and it was love at first sight, I have enjoyed this camera for about 2 years now and just started to feel like I know her completely. We have traveled all over the country and a bit around the world and it feels like an extension of my eyes and my hands. I have since purchased a Leica D-lux 4 Titanium as my “snapshot camera” and together they make a great combo.

I am on my 4th digital camera. The first one I sold. Second is in the cupboard. Third one I carry around in my handbag and the fourth my Pentax X70 is also in the cupboard as it is a bit cumbersome to haul around in my handbag. Still coming to grips with what the X70 has to offer, so will probably be my last one. Although that is what I said about the 3rd one (Fuji Finepix ). This is my emergency camera. Very handy.

I’ve had five, not counting those really cheap keyfob toys and the mobile phone.
My first “digital” camera that could take half-decent stills was a Sony TRV-900E digital camcorder. You downloaded them to a floppy disk using the supplied drive unit. Yes, really. Or the proprietary memory stick. All at a glorious 640×480px. Then:
Minolta Dimage 7 (5MP, my first “proper” digital camera with proper controls)
Fuji FinePix A-something or other (3MP, smaller point’n’shoot I could carry in my handbag)
Canon EOS 400D (10MP and still using it)
Canon PowerShot G9 (12MP and still using it)
September 11th, 2009 at 5:55 pm
First was a Sony Cybershot DSCP10 in 2003 – good honest little camera
Last year got a Canon Powershot SX100IS….
Getting ambitious now…. A Pentax DSLR is in my sights

Still loving my soon-to-be 5 years old Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30 and got a damaged Canon A400 last year which I sent in to fix and am using it in addition to my FZ30. I would like the LX3 and GF1 to be my next acquisition. Possibly add in the S90. :P Dreams…

Just one.
A Fuji finepix S6500fd. Great camera, but I decided to return to film full time.
September 11th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
I have always bought the cheapest camera avialble, which was a mistake! the first was Dimera 3500: resolution onlz 640, fixed focus, no LCD.The pictures were quite decent, but it was impossible to use because the memory card was proprietary and the battery a single Li cell, no rechargeable replacement possible, so it was very expensive to operate. The second was a HP215, good price-quality ratio, maz fist real digital camera, with macro and LCD, but absolutely no manual controls, not even exposure adjustment … and so forth.
In 2007 I got screwed by Canon with S5 IS, which has acceptable noise only at ISO 80, although it boasted max ISO 1600! Now I see a cheap Canon A2000, strictly for beginners, no Av or Tv mode, but with less noise and better noise reduction than my S5!

I still own all 5 digital cameras. Started with an Olympus (D300 I think?) That I bought about approx 14-15 years ago, back when a point and shoot was all you could get and it mean’t getting a second morgage. It also mean’t the death of film for me. The Nikon FE was only used sparingly after that. Then Canon brought out the 300D (original Rebel) and I had to have one. After the 30D came out, the 20D became very reasonable so I got one. However when the 40D was released I was on the preorder list. I love my 40D. Ditto when the G10 was released. I still carry the 20D in my bag but haven’t used it. The G10 goes everywhere with me and if I see something that grabs me, I’ll shoot it. If I don’t have the 40D with me I may return later with it and reshoot spending more time and effort. If I go out specifically, then the 40D goes with me. All the lenses I’ve bought are Canon L so I’ll be shooting Canon for a long while to come. Digital Photography has come a long way. Cameras were very expensive and basic. Film cameras were relatively inexpensive, but film handling was costly. Digital has allowed me to shoot away worry free. I’d really like a 5D Mk2 but my daughter just started University and funds are limited. When she graduates in 4 years it will be a whole new digital world so we’ll see what wonderful new technologies are available then and take it from there. You can be sure though that when she does graduate I’ll have a digital record of the whole event.

speaking of “Canon A60 (stop working)” .. on Christmas 2003 I’ve given myself a gift, Canon A60 – my firsty REAL digital camera! After two years, it become obsolete, since I had a newer one. I still kept it at work and lend it to colleagues who had none. finally, one colleague said he wanted to BUY it, although it was anyway available to him without cost … I did, and he used the A60 succesfully until this spring, when it ceased operating.
September 11th, 2009 at 10:42 pm
The first was inherited – Olympus Camedia E-10
Second – Canon Powershot S3 IS I sold it to purchase my
Third-Canon Rebel XT, sold to a friend after I purchased the D80
Fourth-Nikon D80
Fifth Canon Powershot S5 IS – I brought to NYC with me- small travel camera
Sixth -Nikon D40x (bought on impulse when travelling to NYC- hungry for DSL)
Seventh-Nikon D90 – sold the D80 after much wrangling on making this upgrade. I don’t regret it now!
I am now down to the D40x and D90. I am going to stop here for a while, but I am eyeing a few pro cameras now….
Now, lets talk about accessories…….

All this just to take pictures of my kids and grandkids!

My first digital was a Minolta Dimage 7 introduced in 2001 the early days of DF. In 2007 there was still a hot debate going on among photographers if DF was going to make it or not. The DiMage had many problems the really bad one was the very long long shutter lag that made it hard to take photos of moving subjects. It was so bad I almost gave up on Digital photography. After that, I had a D70, D90 and now a D300. The D70 was huge improvement over the Dimage I loved that camera. Because of their price and quality, the D70 and the simular cameras moved DF to the next level. The D300 is a fabulous camera and big improvement over the D70 and D90 but not a quantum leap.
Anyway……

First I had two Nikon Coolpix point and shoots (dropped one in the tub while shooting my dog in his bath- oops), then I bought my first DSLR, a Canon Rebel Xti, replaced that with a Canon 40D and have since bought another Nikon Coolpix to have something portable/with video.
Next upgrade will be a 5D, I think.

Two. First digital was Minolta point and shoot to go with Minolta film SLR. Wanted Minolta DSLR, but whenthey went out of camera business bought Sony Alpha 200 because I didn’t want to buy all new lenses. Have been very happy with Sony except that it’s too much fun and too easy to use. It’s tough sorting through a 500-shot afternoon to pick out what’s worth keeping and what needs to be thrown out! A long weekend can doom the next several evenings!

Two, a Sony 707 and a Nikon D80. Both still work and are great cameras.

I started out with an Olympus P&S. When it died I got a Kodak P&S. Once I got bit by the photography bug I bought a Rebel XT and then a 5D.

My first was a very strange-looking Casio that shot 640×480 pixel bmps, and had no removable memory card. Purchased in 1994 or so.
My second was a 3 megapixel Olympus C3030Z, purchased in 1997 or so. Terrific camera in all ways. It died after five years of heavy use, when the gearing in the retractable lens wore out. I have stayed an Olympus devotee ever since.
My third was an inexpensive Olympus point and shoot, which was understood to be a temporary solution. My daughter now uses it.
My fourth was an Olympus C5050Z. Still a fabulous camera, superb optics, f1.8 lens, 5 megapixel. I still use it when I can’t make noise while shooting, and for when I can’t handle the weight of my DSLR rig.
My fifth was an Olympus E-1, also 5 megapixel, and my first DSLR. I still have it as a back-up body. My daughter gets to use it on occasion, too.
My current body is an Olympus E-3, acquired in December 2008. I now have four lenses for it. an 18-36mm (35mm equivalent) wide angle, a 28-108 normal, a 100mm macro, and a 100-400 telephoto.

I had a Sony point and shoot which I gave away and got a Canon XT 4 or 5 years ago which I’m still using. I’ve upgraded to better glass over the years but haven’t broken down and upgraded the body yet. Maybe when the 60d comes out? The 7D seem too much for what I do and I’m happy with the images I get from my XT (with good glass). I Goetag images when I travel, so I’d like to see GPS in the camera body and few other features.
September 12th, 2009 at 4:54 am
My first digital camera was a Nikon P80 which I still have and my son Cameron uses, not that he’s ‘into’ photography. I had a Minolta 600si film camera which was stolen from my car – dammit! Insurance replaced it and I bought a Sony A350 which is compatible with my Minolta lenses etc

I have just started to collect and use (extensively) digital cameras. It has been a fantastic hobby and these cameras have lived up to all of my expectations and more.
Nikon D60 – My Wife’s favorite
Nikon D80 – My favorite
Leica D-lux – fantastic color processing
Sigma DP1 – awesome sensor and manual controls
Pana Lumix DMC-FZ50k – unbelievable optics for the price
Olympus SW-1030 – Great for beach, water, cant hurt this thing no matter what.
Canon IS3 – older, rarely used but a great little camera with a great optical zoom.
September 12th, 2009 at 5:38 am
Following a long career path with 35mm slr’s my first venture into digital was with a Fuji Finepix A340 which I am still using, this was followed by a Panasonic Lumix FZ20, some nice shots with the Leica lens but electronic zoom and evf viewfinder were not so good. Took hours to boot up from initial switch on. This has been traded in and I now own a Nikon D80 with several lenses.
September 12th, 2009 at 5:51 am
Mine have been a FugiFinepix 2400 and a Canon Eos 400D, I only use the Canon now.

I started out about 8 years ago with a cypershot Sony 2.1 mgpixels. It was a higher end and it took amazing photos. Then I went for the first Canon SLR digital the 6 mgpixels, second Canon 8 mgpixels, followed by two more Canon SLR’s. Then I purchased the Nikon D80 and then the Sony Alpa 300. I have had several point and shoot cameras but have never been satisfied with them since using SLR’s. I have bought serveral lenses for the Canon’s. Right now, I am wondering how the Olympus cameras fares with the rest.
September 12th, 2009 at 6:26 am
since others have mentioned this …
1. In the ‘70, the only choice were Soviet film cameras, such as Zenit, ZOrki, Kiev, which were strictly mechanical – at most an external light meter!
While I had the HP215, I still used film cameras as a complement, but since Canon, I gave away completly the analog films …
2. I know about Olympus with excellent quality at only 1 Megapixel
Back in 2000, I only dreamed about digital cameras, but a customer come for help and I downloaded the pictures from his Olympus, via serial connection, and put them on a diskette. I looked at thepictures, and they were fine, image quality was excellent.
September 12th, 2009 at 7:21 am
1) Nikon coolpix P11? piece of junk point and shoot
2) Canon S5 IS super zoom
3) Canon G9 compact (excellent camera – still have and use it)
4) Olympus E 510 (a good first DSLR)
5) Olympus E 620 (the best camera I have ever owned)
September 12th, 2009 at 7:27 am
My first and only dslr is Canon’s Rebel XSi. Great picture quality. If Canon’s 7D comes out well from tests that would be my next choice. Though I really like Nikon’s D700. We’ll find out.
September 12th, 2009 at 7:48 am
Digital cameras I have owned are:
Olympus C2020, Olympus C2040, Olympus C725 ZOOM, FUJI Finepix S1000*, CANON A560*, NIKON COOLPIX P60*, MINOLTA MAXXUM 5D* DSLR, SONY a300* DSLR, PENTAX K100D SUPER* DSLR.
The cameras with an ‘*’ beside them are ones I still own/use. I really enjoy all of the DSLRs and the NIKON COOLPIX. I own a PENTAX K-series film camera and have 9 lenses for it and bought the K100D (body only) on a clearance sale to be able to make use of my PENTAX lenses with it. I haven’t shot film since acquiring my first digital camera.
September 12th, 2009 at 9:57 am

My first was a panasonic – tool great pictures and lasted for 10 years before it crashed
Next was the Canon rebel xti which I gave to my daughter
Now I have the Canon rebel xsi
but I am looking at the new canon’s and will probably upgrade in about a year and keep the xsi as a backup

My first was compact Sony DSC H5 and now I got Canon EOS 40D, really keen to upgrade either 5D MkII or 7D seems very promising especially zonal focus points and wireless flash built in.
September 12th, 2009 at 1:25 pm
I just got my first digital of my own! Got a Canon XSi. My family owned a Canon S series, but I wanted something better. Did lots of research, and finially settled on the XSi. Hasent actually come yet, but I’m so excited!
September 12th, 2009 at 1:46 pm
Eight digital cameras, 4 are still doing a good job.
My first digi-cam was the big clunky Canon PowerShot 600 and as I was still involved in film cameras, it did not leave a lasting impression as I can not remember much about it other than the expensive batteries.
The next 3 were all Canon A series point and shoot.
The cameras I now use are the Canon A650IS for good candid shots, The little Nikon CoolPix 3200 that fits in my shirt pocket and great for all those junk pictures that keep you sharp and on your toes. The Canon Rebal XT for group shots and My favorite for shooting everything else, the FujiFilm FinePix S100fs

My wife Pam is also a member of dPs so I have included both of our digital camera aquisitions in the poll. Together we have nine (9) digital cameras. Plus two in our cell cameras which we never use.
We started shooting digitally in September of 2000 with an Olympus D460Z 1.3mp point and shoot camera.
I then bought an Olympus C4040 4mp. Then we both got Olympus C5050 5mp.cameras. Next we each got an Olympus C8080 8mp. All of the Olys were point and shoot cameras.
In July of 2005 I bought my first digital dSLR and my first Canon. A 20D 8.2 mp. Pam got her first dSLR and first Canon a 350D XT Rebel 8mp camera.
In 2006 we both upgraded with Canon cameras: she got a 400D XTi 10mp and I got a full-frame 5.D 12.8 mp which is now my main camera.
In June of this year she upgraded to a Canon 40D 10.1mp. which is now her main camera.

6 or so:
The best P&S: my, now the wife’s Canon S5IS (often better than Nikon D40 results)
Others: 2 x Canon A560 nearly as good as the S5IS and the D40s,
2 Nikon D40’s (DSLR),
Earlier purchases; FinePix (Fujifilm) A500, and the original Fujifilm S3000, took super pictures until dust ruined the sensor and the shutter lag drove me crazy. That’s when I bought the Canon S5IS – I couldn’t decide which DSLR to buy (its was then between Nikon & Olympus as the Canon 450D hadn’t been released yet).
The only one which wasn’t such a clever buy was the Fuji A500 due to battery greed! Still have all of them only the Fuji S3000 perhaps does not work – I tried pulling it apart to clean the sensor but couldn’t get at it and haven’t tried it since I put it back together!
Having treasured the S3000 I now use the rest as often as possible to get the value until their sensors go or….the D40’s are feeling a bit old now as I push my resolution demand on banks of flowers and the like!!! Otherwise they are superb as is the Canon/s (BTW I thought the S5IS out shot my brothers Canon 400D last year when we were in the same location – due no doubt to the digic3 processor and a good large lens on a small sensor!)
Whilst I hanker for an upgrade to the D40’s I might wait until a P&S is a DSLR, for the only thing I find not to my liking since I bought the D40 is the evf of the Canon the A560 has a crude optical view finder which is also better than evf! Though with the S5IS I got used to using evf! The S5IS has bracketing which I miss on the D40 especially in difficult locations situations! Also the D40 won’t drive a number of lens I have bought and disappointingly the D5000 won’t either!
Oh and there are 3 mobile phones with cameras but I hardly ever use one in fact I went back to my idiots phone it was easier to use!
It’s no surprise the Canon S2IS was so popular the S5 was a critically under rated camera but is of the same excellent heritage perhaps the biggest problem was the lack of a good wide angle and a lens cap that falls off all the time!
September 12th, 2009 at 5:15 pm
Nikon Coolpix L3 – first digital camera owned, good one if you know the limitations
Nikon D80 – My present camera.
Olympus u1030SW – for anything like a monsoon trek, rafting, beach, … Photo quality is not great though.
September 12th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
Nikon Coolpix E775, my first, made some good photos but had terrible shutter delays and lens kept jamming
Canon Digital Ixus 700, much better and faster, but I lost it one day, so went and bought:
Canon Digital Ixus 800 IS, terrific P&S, superb pictures with stabilisers, great colours, compact;
…… but then I found the Ixus 700 under the driver seat of my car so I have that too
HTC P3600, although it’s a 2007 model phone and picture quality is not great, this is very important for my photography as it uses the GPS to locate the photos, so I always take some with this
Canon EOS450D, my first DSLR, reusing old lenses from my old film EOS 100QD that I bought in 1992 (and some new imag-stabilised ones), I’m very happy with this but the Ixus 800IS still gets a lot of use because its so handy and even better for macro close-ups.

My first digital was a SONY Mavica that I used at work. I bought my own SONY dsc75 in 2001 and upgraded June 2009 to a Sony HX1 which I love. I guess I became “brand loyal” after using the Sony at work.

Canon EOS 5D Mk II
Canon EOS 20D

2 digital cameras- a Canon G5, which still takes good pictures, despite not being a 20 mp camera like some of the new point and shoots, and a Canon 5D , which I love. Canon’s optics seem to be at the top of the heap right now also.

Canon PowerShot G11 (On pre-order_New model not available until September 28, 2009.) This has all of the features I’m looking for in a camera including: live histogram, powered shoe, light weight (1pound) and takes outstanding pictures according to my research.

Hi there,
My first Point and shoot was the Ricoh Caplio R1v bought in 2005 (still have it but dont use it anymore…)
The first DSLR i bought was Nikon D80, i sold it off, problems with body. (2006-2007)
Second and still using DSLR Canon EOS 400D (2007- current)
But how ever the body is not what makes the PHOTO ! it is the lenses what make the Photo of good quality !

A Mavica owner! This is formidable!
Please share your experiece with us – how did you use it?
What did you do with the pics? Before 1989, for us behind the Iron Curtain a PC was somtehing out of a Sci-Fi movie, but even in advanced countries, back in 1990 a computer was expensive, more so one with capabilities to process high quality color photos.
So, in the eighties what did you do? Take pics with a Mavica, and then what do you do with the diskette?
There are no high resolution CRT screens to display it, no color printers, no e-mail to send them to friends, no photo frames to display the pics …

First digital camera was a Canon powershot 40 I think.
The second one was a Casio Exilim EX-Z750, a very small compact that also took nice pictures
Third was the Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ8, I still Like this camera. Great lens.
Fourth was and is my Nikon D40, a camera capable of taking great pictures. I think for the average person who just enjoys taking pictures, most camera’s do a good job. I’m 73 years old and took an interest in photography about three years ago. I wish I thought about photography 50 years ago. Really enjoy it.

Is it just me or has anyone else noted how many people have had to replace/purchase new cameras because some low life STOLE their existing one???
What is wrong with people? What makes them think that they can just take what isn’t theirs?
Why shouldn’t they work their arse off like the rest of us to buy what we want????
Ok I feel better now! lol
Sometimes you just have to get things off your chest!
PS I’ve already answered the poll………. I’ve had too many cameras to list……. or remember!
Currently dreaming of a 40 or 50D or maybe the new 7d??

Hi Jane,
I recently read a tip that said, your camera bag can be a real temptation for someone to steal when you have a Canon, Nikon name on it. It is much safer to put your camera and lenses in a diaper bag.
Sounds like a good idea to me. It’s just a shame you have to go through all that to try and prevent someone from stealing your property. Not all camera’s are stolen. My wife and I were looking at model homes in a Dell Webb community in Shorewood IL. We found a Kodak digital point and shoot with the case and all left in a model home. We turned it over to one of the sales people hoping he may recognize someone in the photo’s and able to return it. I also called Dell Webb and let other sales people know the situation. With a little luck it may get back to the owner. There was no ID in the case, just a phone number would have been nice.
September 13th, 2009 at 7:35 pm
Started with a Kodak DC5000 (still have it) and now have a Canon PowerShot S3 1S.
Also have a Rolleicord Va and a Pentax Z-10.
As for security, a good tip I read recently was to place a text file on the SD card in your camera, offering a reward and contact details. Probably only work effectively if the camera was found by an honest person :-).

Lance,
My dad took a picture of a piece of paper with his name and contact info, and even put “reward”, and has that picture protected, so when the card is erased, it is always still there. Don’t know if it would really work cause it would be harder to find if there were a bunch of shots on the card.

How i have progressed, from 2MP to 12.3MP, from thinking 64MB was an upgrade from 32MB to saying Mehh to a 8GB card. from thinking being able to pre-focus was great to being able to take 4.5 FPS (and knowing thats even slow). From hardly knowing how to use the camera, to working in a camera shop telling people how to use a camera…
life aye

I think I’ve been though 5, might be 6……..let’s see:
Kodak DC4800 – 3.1MP, 3x optical zoom
Olympus mju400
Canon 10D
20D
mju1040
50D
still using the 10 & 50Ds for jobs.
the mju1040 goes with me everywhere – I can’t bear to miss a photo opportunity
full frame coming next – I’ll probably look for a 2nd hand 5DMkII when the 7D hits the market

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-P51
Canon 450D – my current model which goes with me everywhere
I thought the Sony was great with 2.0 megapixels and a 16MB Memory Stick but the Canon with 12.2 megapixels and memory limited to my budget (currently 3 x 4GB and 1 x 2GB) plus the 3inch LCD screen blows my mind.
