Default 3-D Photography

3-D Photography.

Heh, that rhymes.

This has been on DPS before, I believe. But I'd like to give my points on it.

Anyway, the technical term for this is, "Stereo Pairs." You can actually put 2 pictures up side by side and merge them together in your brain to make a 3 dimensional image. It takes a bit of practice, but once you have it down, you have it down. And it actually gives a new meaning to "pop." For this, you *could* use a Stereo Pair lens. For about $100, it's yours. Here's the product page, and a sample image on the left side near the bottom.

"But what do I do with those side by side images? They don't look 3-D to me...."

Well, you have to learn how to see them. Most people that can cross their eyes [I can't and I can still do this] can do this. Wall eyes even works. Anything that makes "2 pictures" with your eyes will work. Here's an article.

Once you have that down, move on.

There is something specific on that page you may have noticed. One eye needs to see a slightly different view. Which means you need to take the pictures in different positions. And for most focal lengths, [at least under tele] shifting your weight from one foot to the other should do. Longer FL's may take even less, depending on the subject. Now, always take the pictures in Portrait orientation [up and down]. This just makes it strain full on the eyes because they don't have to cross as much. It also makes it appear more "3-D-ish" because it makes the position change seem more dramatic. That has downfalls, but I won't cover them.

Let's cover the actual picture taking. Hold the camera in Portrait Orientation. [Ummmmm...... yeah. :{ | ] Lean most of your weight onto your right foot without lifting up your left foot. Take a picture at your preferred camera settings. With those same settings, lean on your left foot. Take a picture. That's it. Yeah, I know. All that writing for 3 sentences of explanation, you probably feel jipped. BUT... The reading IS worth it, and so is the practice.

ONE last thing. Use whatever software you want to put the pictures side by side I can't cover all of the different softwares. And make sure the right foot one IS on the right, makes a difference even though I'm not sure why. I've also posted a sample at the end of this post. Just for you to check out all the little things in action. And to practice viewing on if you want something... ehm... not that different.

Peace out.
