Just bumped into this tutorial while searching for something else.

Sounds simple, now that you explained it so well. I will definitely try this on the weekend!

Is it possible to do this without a remote trigger? Also, how much lighting do you need?

Set the timer and get closer and closer between shots

Another way of doing this is to hook up your camera to USB and fire up your camera software (I have the canon stuff).

(I'm doing this from memory so details may be missing)

Go to the live shooting mode. This will show what the lens sees on your screen and you can adjust focus by clicking arrows to step focus in and out bit by bit till you get where you want to be. Then you just click the shutter and it'll shoot the photo for you!

Wow, great suggestion about hooking up your camera to a PC

"Also, how much lighting do you need?"
I don't really know what you mean, i just lit the first one with a window and the second with this home-made pop up flash diffuser (they call it a ring flash but it's not) http://www.adidap.com/2007/12/20/diy...man-ring-flash
I would really recommend it, the only thing is that you do get some odd specular highlights, i used the patch tool to get rid of them.

Of course you could just do it in bright daylight. Not so bright that you're blinded but enough to light your face. Put a white piece of card under your face to prevent harsh shadows if you want!
