Great info...thank you for taking the time to put it all down! Start strong and end strong.....I think this phrase will stick with me even if I have to come back to remind me of the rest!

This is a great post, Jim, though I would add just one non-photographic notion. Go all out on your presentation materials! This is your work and it represents you and your body of work. Do not cut corners on the actual portfolio, matting and other presentation materials you use. You don't put a Rembrandt in a plastic portfolio with yellow torn sleeves and you shouldn't put your work in one either. Get the best you can afford and let it speak for you.

The explanation of the portfolio is very good especially for a beginner trying to set up his first portfolio.

Excellent. excellent post. Thank you Jim. Now, if I could only get more keepers and less weeds in my work, I'ld be getting somewhere.

While I wont be making a proper portfolio for a while, I really like this write up and will come back to it when I do.

I'm a beginner with no training and none of the fancy gear, but I hope to start a photography course this summer and will start building my portfolio immediately. Thank you for your willingness to share practical information for beginners and experienced alike!
