will you post it? Would love to see the final result. Not enough examples have come through, but loads of people liked the effect so there have to be more out there!

Here's my effort:

I think I went a tiny bit overboard on the grunge brushes... it's the first time I've used ones other than the original lot. Was trying for a sort of red and black Soviet vibe...

Thanks very much for posting this tutorial, it's very informative.

Sure. Here it is. But I don't know why I can't get my image to show up larger like everyone else's. (Sorry, I'm a newbie.)

PS It's not large because most people on here use something like flickr, and embed the photo.

Thanks Eric - this was a fun tutorial! Here's my take - my son's always got a goofy face which is perfect for this.

How did everyone get their photos to turn to black? Mine turned brown. For some reason, after I make my quick mask and delete the background, the photo turns lighter/transparent and ghostly looking. I think that's why my photo is brown and not black. I checked all the settings for the opacity, fill and flow and they're all set at 100%. I also checked the Quick Mask options and the opacity is set at 100% there, too. I can't figure this out. Can someone help me?

I'm not sure where its going wrong, but it does appear that I can see your gradient through the thresholded portrait. So, somewhere in there, the opacity is getting reduced.

If you paint at 30% opacity in quick mask mode and try to delete it, it will only reduce the opacity to 70%. I suspect that you are somehow painting the whole image with a a light brush -- say 20% or so -- and when you delete the background, it reduces the opacity of the image you want to stay to 80%.

Make sure you only mask out the background and that you don't accidentally mask out the portrait by 20%.

i "cheated" and used the "stamp tool"
all you have to do is rotate it to the right angle again after the stamp has been made.. Then use the magic wand to delete the white bits.. (experiment using contiguous on/ or off) then use paint bucket to paint your stamp black.

i had to do it this way.. as far as i've found elements does not have a "select highlights" function.

good luck
