Cool How to use the Bulb setting...

I used the bulb setting for the first time this past 4th of July. It worked like a dream shooting fireworks. Basically, set the shutter to bulb, use either a wired or wireless remote to trip the shutter. With bulb, you are controlling when the shutter opens, how long it stays open and when it closes. Press the shutter button to open the shutter, hold the button down until you want the shutter to close, then release the button, the shutter closes and you have an exposure. Trials are a must to see how long you need to keep the shutter open in your specific application. For fireworks, I used about 8-10 sec. I have gone all the way to 30 sec. with it before too. Hope this helps.

Default Photoshop...

As far as Photoshop goes, the question is where to begin? I have used Photoshop since 1992 on an old Mac computer. I have evolved with the program and now have CS. I haven't upgraded to CS3 (CS4 is coming out real soon) because I have been comfortable with where I am. I now am going to upgrade because I want to begin shooting in RAW and use Lightroom 2. Photoshop is an awesome, powerful program. I still learn new things almost daily. The best advise I can give is to open it up and play with it. Use the tutorials available on youtube, MCP, Unsharpmasked and I'm certain there are many others. There are so many, actually countless possibilities with Photoshop, learn it and use it.

Photoshop tutorials would be great.
It`s so complicated and user unfriendly.
At least knowing how to use basics of PS to edit photos
in an easy way.

My website links page (see sig at the bottom) has some info including a link (bottom of links page) to Ron Bigelow's photoshop tutorials, all free and very useful bite sized pieces for anyone starting out in photoshop.

It's a slow process of using the program to do the things you want one at a time until you build a range of skills. Even though I have many years experience I still learn new things every day, it's a massive program so don't try to take it all in at once! Baby steps.

I've used ps for many years and am very lucky because my employer has a licence which allows me home use for free with all the upgrades! Bring on CS4!

How to buy a hood for your lens!

I've found a few DPS articles on how to choose a lens, and how to choose a filter, but none on choosing a hood! I know nothing about them... what am I looking for when I shop for one, what size do I need for lens "X", what kind of prices can I expect, what brands are good, etc.? Maybe also explain again why one might want a hood (I know it cuts down on flare, ie. sun rays; but I hear it may add some protection for your lens if it gets bumped or falls... is that true?)

About the basic Photoshop learning: I was thinking of writing a tutorial about it, but there are already lots of resources about that, some of them are not free but I think it's understandable given the time invested in describing every aspect of photoshop. Is it really difficult to find free basic Photoshop tutorials? If so I'd consider starting a series about that on my blog

Default How to get "rich" color shots

So often when I take a picture it seems great but once I get it on the computer it seems dull and flat.

I keep seeing these amazing shots of "bokeh" on Flickr (Happy Bokeh Wednesday seems to be really popular). After some research, I think I've got a decent understanding of what bokeh is, but I have no idea how to achieve it. I know it's a lot due to the aperture, but also seems to have a lot to do with the lens. If there was a tutorial to explain what bokeh is, what kind of aperture (and other) settings are needed to achieve it, and what lenses are preferable, that'd be fantastic!

Default Pumpkin tut

I'm looking for a tutorial on how to use photoshop to make it look like you carved someones face into a pumpkin, using a shot of a kids face. Anyone have any ideas ?? Or how about a tutorial on how to make carving stencils from a photo.

Thanks in advance
