The principles of using a DSLR are the same as any other camera, except the DSLR will possibly be a lot more responsive and have better performance. By changing the lens it can be set up for specific jobs as almost the perfect camera for that job. Also read the manual to see how you change settings for your camera. You may find these DPStutorials of interest. (1) Exposure Exposure (1) A balancing act (2) Light. Light #1 - Introduction. (3) Lenses. Lenses #1 - Introduction to DSLR lenses.

I have seen so many portraits lately that seem to be taken outdoors with bright sunlight at the edge of lens flare; the pics seem moderately overexposed, usually of children or girls, lots of light on the hair. I'll try to post a few examples... how do I get that look?http://www.lynnerigby.com/v1site_ima...0%201336059451

@ skylashell
What sort of camera will you be using and if it is a DSLR what lenses do you have? Are flashguns allowed? How far away will you be from the subjects?
