Any thoughts on what I could have done to make this shot a little bit better?

Not quite sure if you mean to edit the photo you have, or to have taken the photo itself differently?

It might have been a cool persepective, to lay on the ground beneath them, so the sky is your only background, and zoom in tighly so the jumble of locks is all you see. Maybe black and white or even selective colour?

From the photo as is, you might like to crop a bit, or play with saturation and a little contrast...

Thinking of Halloween, it might make a cool selection to layer on a haunted house door or hung from chains around the neck of a ghoulish ghost!

Very interesting find! Have fun playing!

i agree with pix_e about laying down and getting the sky as a background. Also, you could try zooming in on one of the locks in the middle of the bundle, possibly play with the dof.

I agree with Culpepper and Pix, shooting from closer to the ground would have separated the locks from the background clutter. Also, I would try to straighten the image so that the pole was horizontal and, work on the focus.

Thank you pix_e_l8, that is the advice I was looking. I am just starting on this photography thing. As for the Haunted house, that is a great idea I am just learning CS4 also. Thank you again. If you have more advice it would be much appreciated.

Notice that you'd only have to pick one of those locks to get it open?
