Hello DPS Family!
This is a Korean rest stop, from days of Old, well preserved, I asked a friend what the sign says above the doors and he told me it's Old Chinese. It say " Rest and Observe the River as it ripples" Perhaps not an exact interpretation, but as close as I could get. There is a lovely river about 50 meters to the left, but I couldn't get to it to get a picture. Michael, I see your picture in two ways...One, the architecture of the rest stop itself lends to the image of a modern rest stop on the interstate. The lines of the bamboo mimic the lines of the steel roof, the curves mimic the often modernish lines, and there's an inside and an outside.
Now the second way. The sepia and the stonework carry me back to my childhood, to a world without interstate highways, to 2 lane roads that went through little towns, and you traveled all day with the windows open because of the blistering heat of the South. I'm carried back to the wayside table on the side of the highway. There'd be a sign that said: "Wayside Table 1/4 Mile". We'd pull off the highway onto a gravel drive cordoned off by a rope or a steel cable run between stone posts. We'd get out of the car and go take our lunch on the stone picnic table. It would be a pleasant stop to rest up a bit and get a respite from the noise and the wind of the car with the windows down. I like this memory a whole lot better. Thanks for the trip.

I remember the Wayside Tables, mostly from traveling when I was young with my parents. But the Tables were mostly Wooden. The road that goes by this place has been the main road from Pusan to Jinju for well over a 1000 years; This is one of the few building of it's type that survived the Japanese invasions of the 1500 hundreds. Thanks for your kind comments. Thanks Beach! When I look at this place, I can imagine the movement of goods and travel from Busan which is approx 120 Kilometers from Jinju along the dirt road, people stopping to rest and draw water from the river and sharing meals and conversation;. Hundreds of years before the roads were paved cars sped by.
