Default Texture Assignment Used Face and Hands

I recently started a 9 month workshop on visualization. Our first assignment is textures. I still have a couple weeks to do this and then have to present 6 of my best shots to the class/instructor for critique. This is my start. I shot my hands and then laid my face on the table and took some shots of it for eyes, skin and beard textures. Here are just a few representative shots:

I'd say you were doing pretty good with the assignment and I'm certain your feedback will be fair, balanced, evidenced, supportive and developmental, if its not I say we get the red sphere out again.
Good looking set Rusty

Hi Rusty - I am amazed at how clear these images are ... exposure is spot-on .. good luck with your workshop and I'm certain you will do very well with your presentation

Thanks beach. I've already seen how the critiques are handled by the instructor and he does a very good job of critiquing while also being encouraging. So I feel god about it. I will be revisiting the red sphere again but I'm focusing on this workshop which is designed to get us to develop our eye while also developing an individual style.

Thanks Hayward. What I did was get an exposure reading with my Digital Calibration Disk (it also let's me set a custom white balance). Then I placed a tennis ball on the shooting table to get my focus -- I set focus manually. I then marked the spot where the tennis ball had sat. I placed my hand/hands appropriately.

I also set the camera for a timed exposure and used a cable release to trigger the shutter. With the timed exposure I had plenty of time to set my hands in place before the shutter triggered. For my face, I used the same focus point but just laid my head sideways on the shooting table. Then I rotated the images in Adobe Camera Raw.

These are all pretty much SOOC except for crops.

For lights I used my two Westcott TD5s and one TD3 fixture (all with florescent tubes). I also used my 580EX II with a Coco ring-flash attached -- that's what gave me the catchlight in my eye(s). It's a nice little device just like a Rayflash (but it cost about one-quarter the price of the Rayflash).
