Default Guildford Castle

The weather was abit hit and miss today, but I managed to get out anyway and take some shots of Guildford Castle. It's only small, but is set in some really nice gardens. Thanks for looking.

Martin.

Ela, Lenoa - Thanks. It's a nice place - the gardens are very well tended.

Very Beautiful place! Your photos do it justice! Well composed and presented! I really like a four. They have a HDR look to them.
Thanks for Sharing these
Michael.

Thanks Michael. Yes it's a real gem - just a street away from the High Street in Guildford. If you didn't know it was there you'd probably miss it.

You're right - they're all HDRs, but I'm still learning - if I'm honest they are probably slightly over processed (but it's all subjective anyway - some people like and some loath it). Thanks for looking.

Martin.

Very nice.

I could tell they were HDR by the tree branches in the second picture. If you layer the images in photoshop you will be able to mask out the parts of the finished HDR that you dont like (like the ghosted branches).

Every time i see photos of castles in England i just want to jump on a plane and head over..these are dramatic and very nicely captured...i enjoyed them very much.
Can you tell us any of the history of the castle?

Thanks for the tip - I hadn't thought of that. I'll have to brush up my masking technique in PS - sounds like it could be fiddly...

I understand it was built shortly after the battle of hastings, in 1066, by William the Conqueror but the tower in the photo's wasn't added until approx 1130. The Castle itself lies on the Pilgrims Way (as does Guildford) and apparently William ransacked various towns along the way to Canterbury (including Guildford) but came back later and built the castle.

The tower was believed to have been first used as private appartments for the King, and then later used by the Sheriff of Guildford as a Gaol (Jail). More info here: Guildford Castle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
