Default Abandoned Silo

These are photos of an old, abandoned silo at the Port of Tampa. I've been wanting to photograph this for a while now, and finally made the time.

(Still trying to figure out B&W conversion on these first 2.)

Adandonded Silo 1

Adandonded Silo 3

Adandonded Silo 1

Adandonded Silo 4

Thanks for looking.

wow - I've never seen a silo this close - usually from a distance .. the last photo could pass for selective coloring .. very nice Chip

Thanks very much, Hayward. As for being this close, I honestly had no choice - there was an elevated highway right behind me, and the property was all fenced off. And for the last one, all I did to the color was to bump up the reds just a bit.

Hey Chip, they look like they're pretty tall. I like the BW in the first two.

I like your perspective on these...I really enjoy seeing all the different compositions the photographers on this site come up with.

Thank you, Fred. I guess the silo is about 125 feet tall? Rough guess, though.

FoG - Many thanks. I don't know what was stored in there - maybe phosphate? We don't have much grain here in Florida, so I don't think it would be grain. Glad you liked the last one.

Thanks very much, Leona. The perspective was sort of forced - since I don't have a super wide lens, getting the whole silo wasn't an option. So, I really had no choice but to photo selected parts of it.

Chip, I rest my case. These are prime examples of why abstract art will always find an audience. There is something so visually freeing to be untethered from a subject and being able to roam free around edges, negative space and subtle gradients of color--even monochromatic schemes. My favorite is your second photo, primarily, I think (and I don't want to over think it), because of the way the negative space effects the visual flow. I also love your BW experiments. Fun, huh?

Chip, these were worth the drive. The black and white is what makes the top two. I love the shapes. Well done on the last two also. Like everybody else has said, it looks a lot like selective coloring. You've shown a lot of creativity in these, finding a perspective that makes a plain, mundane object very appealing.

They are big and they are impressive, what a great selection of pictures.
I'd actually like a few more of these pictures if you have them, perhaps from a a bit further back to get the size better.
They are a wonderful find and the location is worth another visit.
