PS: I lived two years in Grand Forks, North Daktoa, and one time I observed these lights quite clear. Is that normal? I thought that was too far south.
I've seen this phenomenon in southern Wisconsin a couple of times but it is quite rare & not all that colorful.

Privat and newhorizon, thank you!!!

If you can stand the cold, this is a pretty nice season of the year, with polar nights and nothern lights. I didn't like shooting nature and landscape shots during the summer (yeah, I'm a strange guy) but things just get more interesting during the winter.

Digidave: maybe it's because of the light pollution? I recently read an article in NG about this. Aurora borealis can be visible pretty far south, but since the sky is brightened by surrounding lights (often not visible, but it's there) it's hard to see.

[QUOTE=zetson;326782]

I exposed the picture for 30 seconds, which I believe is too long. If you view this picture in full size, the movement of stars and branches is visible, and since the lights were moving rapidly, I didn't catch the different shapes that the light created. All you see in this picture is one big mass of green light. So stay tuned! These lights shall not escape my CMOS sensor this winter, LOL.

[QUOTE]

at a small size the star trail is only barely visible, its a great shot, i think its a bit more dramatic like this with the longer exposure as you get more green. maybe next time find a foreground object that wont move as much?
i look forward to more!

Default Aurora

Hi Zetson,

This is beautiful!!

Last winter I spent a week in Fairbanks, AK, partly in search of the Aurora borealis although I have seen them many times before. We saw them, but I didn't capture anything as good as this (still had my old camera). About 3 weeks after we got home to southern British Columbia, we were treated to another dancing sky, but not nearly as colorful as this, and I just enjoyed it without a camera lens.

Please post more or direct us to a gallery.

What a stunning shot zetson. I love the colour and I think the tree in the foreground adds to the picture.

My sister (who is also interested in photography) is lucky enough to be going to Tromso in a couple weeks. She is going to try and get some shots of the Aurora Borealis too.

Your beautiful picture has just made me all the more jealous! LOL
