Default Fairly new...

I only joined the site this month and I already feel I am sponging in a lot from what everyone shares here. I apologize for not adjusting the image sizes previously, but I think I have that under control now If I do not, please feel free to edit or let me know what I am doing wrong. Here are my two cents, sometimes people in the "Share your Shots" section may just want a COMMENT you know? However, when asked -"Let me know what you guys think" or "How do you like this or that" the reply tends to be ---Well, if you want critique post it in the critique section..tisk tisk. LOL. I think maybe the difference between a comment and critique should be made a little more clear in everyones minds Thanks again for DPS!

Comment vs critique is a bit fuzzy. I think "comments" should be limited to things like "Great shot!" (and other encouragements - if you hate a picture, don't waste your time on it) and perhaps questions about the subject like "What breed of dog was that?" or "I know that spot - have you been there early in the morning when the sun is just rising".

In a nutshell, things you could say to someone who isn't necessarily a very technically skill photographer and who won't get stuff like "You should have used the rule of thirds" or "a smaller aperture would give you better DoF". That's not to say the more technically skilled photographers shouldn't post in Share Your Shots - sometimes they also want to share a shot they love without people obsessing about whether the horizon is completely level!

Default Clarification

I was one of those newbies that didn't clearly read the rules in the beginning. Ooops. Won't happen again.
Quick question though: I posted a thread question on the 'General discussions'. Since I started that thread today, does that mean I can not now go and post a picture thread on the 'Share your photo' section? Is the one thread rule a general rule or is it more focused on the 'Share your photo' secion?

Sorry if this is also in the rules somewhere already.

This isn't an "official" reply, but I'm pretty sure the "one thread per day" just applies to the Share Your Shots area. Otherwise I'd have been mod-smacked by now myself.

The official reply Is that the areas with limits are: Critique and SYS. Each of which can have 1 thread started per day. So, you can share 2 shots and you can get critique on 1 shot all in a day. And the critique thread rule applies to all areas (so if you start a thread in Landscape you can't go and start another one in Animal / Wildlife). Other than that, there are no posting limits in the other areas. Hope that's clear-ish

Perfectly clear. That is what I figured, but wanted to make sure. Thanks!

i know them now, but i've noticed that people that are new don't know the rules at first and yes, they should probably read them before posting, but maybe we should all just cut them some slack.
from past experience, not knowing the rules seemed to have made some people mad.
there's no need to get frustrated at the people who don't know the rules because that just makes them feel almost like they're not welcome because they did something wrong.
if you are going to tell them what they did wrong, do it in a polite manner or just let them figure it out themselves.
so what they post a couple of pictures in the wrong place..?
this website is all about learning
let them learn their mistakes without being criticized

just be patient
I just found this forum last night (late) and started out reading but then responded to a post (What Makes a Great photo- I haven't found the thread this morning, I'm still looking)
I didn't really read rules, eithere, I was excited to find this group, which seemed FRIENDLY (years ago, I tried to find photography and camera groups and found mainly people with a lot of money bragging about their expensive cameras and equipment and ignoring what seemed like "real people" who didn't have as many megapixals as they did)
This morning I've been looking around here more and now finding all the rules, which in a way are kind of intimidating. Not more than one thread per day, not more than 1 picture in a post, except you can put 2 in the first post, etc. I'm not sure I can remember it all, at least to start and now it sounds like I will get "jumped on" if I mess up.
As to the rules about not posting too much, how I found this forum, I read about a contest to win a Nikon D60 camera (I am currently trying to save up for, since my Canon Powershot G6 has problems). The contest (unless the site I read about it on is OLD) said the more one posts here the more enteries in the contest. Of course, once I saw the forum, I realized it wouldn't be hard to get into threads and posting here even without a contest
But, in one place it says the more you post the more enteries into the contest you have, and now I read things like "only one thread per day", and I've totally lost track of how many photos one can or can't post in what threads!
I know... a forum that is good size (like this one seems to be) has to have some rules to keep order. But, I've been on really big groups (for example The Tech Guy, computer help) that didn't seem to have rules like this one.
I don't know if I'm going to get into trouble for posting this, or if it's okay for me to post in the "rules" thread, or maybe this won't even show up.
Last night it seemed like this would be a great, fun, interesting place to share and learn.
Now, it seems like I have to go over it all and write down all the rules and what I can/can't do, how many ofwhat in what, etc. and go over it before I post. To get it straight. Or, I'm gonna get yelled at or unsubbed or what I write not allowed on?

Maybe I have it wrong, and if I hang in here and read and post more I'll get used to it.

But, I too am sorry if I broke or break any of the rules, I didn't realize there were so many of them to remember and work around when I found this group and just "jumped in" last night.

I don't even know if my post ever got on, now that I realize I didn't know all the details about posting...

And, maybe there's a rule about writing too much, posts that are too long, and I've already broken that one, with this?

Welcome to DPS!
No, you are not in "trouble". And we are very lenient with new posters until they get the hang of things.
The reason for the limited posting rules in "Share Your Shots" and "Critique" were because some people put up so many at one time, other posters threads were falling to the second, third or fourth pages without having a chance to be seen. It seems complicated the first time you read them, but if you follow them once, you should have no trouble any other time.
The "Win a Nikon" contest was last spring. You won by posting throughout the forum in all categories, not just "Share Your Shots" or "Critique". Unfortunately the place you read about it must have been reporting old information it had not bothered to update.
