Angry If you see red...

...tear your hair out

Alright here is a photo I took today. SOOC. Not a single adjustment of any kind made.

Here is the same photo. SOOC. Not a single adjustment of any kind made. But this time a screenshot of how it is viewed in Photoshop CS2.

What do I need to do to get rid of that horrific blown-out red?!!? This is not the first time it has happened to me; many a red shot has been ruined in the past.

Here are some pertinent details:

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi
Exposure: 0.033 sec (1/30)
Aperture: f/2.8
Focal Length: 50 mm
ISO Speed: 800
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: Off, Did not fire
File Type: JPEG
Exposure Program: Aperture-priority AE
Metering Mode: Multi-segment
Color Space: sRGB
Exposure Mode: Auto
White Balance: Auto
Quality: Fine
Contrast: Normal
Saturation: Normal
Metering Mode: Evaluative
Canon Exposure Mode: Aperture-priority AE
Lens Type: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 MkII

Help >_<

Maybe it has to do with the color space you setup ? (Edit menu - Collor settings)

Digital cameras blow the reds ALL the time: you have to watch out for it. It can be tricky.

I know its not super convenient, but I shoot film for anything with ALOT of red in it if I can.

Hm. Well I don't really think it is the camera's fault, since in the first photo posted the reds aren't really blown. A bit hot in places, but nothing compared to the second image.

I really don't know squat about color spaces so I'm going to test woods' theory.

I had similar problems and it nearly drove me crazy trying to get my head around the whole colour space business. What I found after reading a lot of different opinions and debates on various websites was that sRGB is the standard most used on the web and and in printers and photo print shops.

When I checked my colour settings in Photoshop I found they were set to Adobe RGB and my monitor was set to sRGB so when I viewed pictures in explorer or another program such as Picasa they looked different to when viewed in Photoshop which made editing difficult to say the least.

When I made sure that everything in my computer was set to sRGB - Photoshop, monitor and video card settings and also the camera itself - everything looked the same and the photos print out as expected.

Hope this is some help, good luck.

Cheers,

Gerard

MadGeds spot on its all colour spaces check your colour management options.

Your camera works in one colour space and attaches a colour profile to your picture usually sRGB unless changed to AdobeRGB. The interesting thing is AdobeRGB covers more colours so when you open an sRGB photo it spreads the colours out as the colours are farer apart in the Adobe RGB profile.

That was a lot of waffel lol im sorry but I just wanted to explain why it happened. But the solution is as above if you shoot in sRGB and print locally change photoshop to sRGB.
