Question Resizing problems

OK I have a conundrum here...............

During post processing I crop using a 8X10 300 DPI setting then make all of my adjustments to the pictures I think will be chosen as 8X10's and crop at a 5X7 to the pictures I think will be picked to purchase as a 5X7.
When someone choses a 8X10 as a 5X7 I have to crop off an inch or two of the picture just to be able to fit it as a 5X7. And if someone choses a 5X7 as a 8X10 the picture will not expand to fit as a 8X10.

Now my question is:
Do you all PP and save a 5X7 and a 8X10 image just in case a client wants either/or?

OR

Is there a way to resize and keep the proportions without losing any of the image??

This is one of the best questions I have ever seen! I so want to hear how people do it! Here is what I did recently:

Did all my post processing on the image and didn't crop it all, just called it "filenamemaster."

Then, whenever they ordered a different size, I went back and cropped it to that size.

Can't wait to see what others do, because it is kind of a hassle!

I have always struggled with this in Photoshop! I'm curious to read how others do it as well!

I do like your idea of a master photo though!

You didn't mention what program you use for PP. Can you add that so others may be better equipped to answer your question.

You *can* re-size images to different ratios, but you get nasty results.

Standard 2:3 (4x6) size, SOOC

CROPPED to 4:5 (8x10)

RESIZED to 4:5 (8x10)

As you can see, the CROP cuts a fair bit out of the right side of the frame. While the RESIZED version keeps the entire scene, it squishes it up.

This is actually an old trick: Re-size images to a different aspect ratio, ever-so-slightly, to make a model appear thinner, or a truck wider, or what have you.

I guess this will be one of those unanswered questions of the universe LOL
Osmosis I know you can re-proportion but I don't want to do that. I just wondered if there was a way to crop and keep the proportions because as others have stated it is a PAIN to re-crop and 5X7 to a 8X10 and not have enough picture to fill the frame or crop an 8X10 to a 5X7 and lose half the picture.

Whenever I shoot portraits and such where I don't know what the ultimate print ratio will be, I tend to leave zoom out a little bit as to give me room to crop in on either side, that way I don't compose a shot perfectly only to find out the customer wants it printed at a ratio that ends up cropping part of their head off.

And myself, I just leave it at the original ratio and deal with crops once people order. It doesn't make any sense to change the ration without know what sizes or sizes the customer will be ordering.

OK...what I typically do is make some crops of only certain images..usually to make, or offer a better, or new composition of the original (and I always do a "save as" on the crops) I do these as 4 x 6's which is what we proof out to our customers. So, they may see a combination of various crops of the same image..again, all done as 4 x 6's. If they want to order an enlargement of one of those cropped versions I then go back to the original file and produce an enlargement for them that physically works out to be close to the look of the 4 x 6 cropped version they liked. I hope this is clear??

OK I did some searching and have found this which helps tremendously!!!
Save as a 8X10 and use these instructions on how to resize to a 5X7 and not lose proportions!

There are those times, however, that because of the difference in the aspect ratios between images SOOC Vs an enlargement of such image, you wind up in a difficult situation. As in a tight crop SOOC of a subject, and the customer wants say an 11 x 14 crop, and you know you'll be cutting off some of the image data to do that..like the top of a head for example. Sometimes, there can be a simple solution. When you do your crop of this type of image, you can drag the corner of the crop frame beyond it's normal ending spot...this will leave a white open boarder around the now cropped image to which you can clone adjacent image data into. You usually can get away with this if it's background data, but never if it's the actual person. Kind of a neat trick that, when it works, can save the full image for you
