Question Accentuating sun-rays

I'm not sure if this is the place to post this, if it isn't please feel free to move it or point me to where it should be: I have a picture I took a while back that has the sun filtering through the trees. I've seen a lot of images where the sun's rays are very accentuated, some overly so, but I'm not sure how to do this. I am moderately capable in photoshop but I can not seem to figure out how to make the rays pop more than they do but not look artificial. Thank you in advance for any ideas

It's not photoshop. At least for the most part.

Getting the rays of light to show is a matter of environment: a bit of haze in a forest or dust. That catches the light and reflects it.

Oh I understand the basic physics of it but what I see are images where the rays seem to be glowing through the tree's - they are there but enhanced. It's that enhancement, not actually making the ray's happen that I was wondering how it's done.

I am trying to locate the image that I saw that made me wonder about this, but of course I can't find it again, I saw it on a website and I'm trying to find it again to illustrate how strong the rays looked. I have tried an over-all curves adjustment but maybe I should just try to target the rays with the tool in cs4 I hadn't thought of that. As soon as I can find the example (and my own image) I'll post them so it will be a better way of understanding what I am trying to ask. Thanks!

Do you know if it would be a filter, or an action someone has made? I've seen lighting effects filters but that wouldn't give the effect I'm looking at.

I'm willing to bet there is an action somewhere to create it. Paint Shop Pro has an effect thats actually called sun sun burst.
Also found this tutorial that might be of some help
