Photoshop CS4 - Cannot use tools?

Hey guys. I just moved from linux and using GIMP to windows 7 using Photoshop CS4. I'm trying to edit some pictures, but I apparently cannot use the tools. For example, I'll select the brush tool along the left hand side of the screen, and then select a brush - but when I go to paint, the cursor is a small hand, and every time I try to paint it simply moves the picture around as if I was using the hand tool. The hand tool is not selected while this is happening.

Anyone have any ideas?

Nevermind. It's working now. I have no idea what I did though.

You probably had your hand or something else resting on the space bar. When you press the space bar, your cursor automatically turns into the hand tool. Just a guess.
