Default Open CR2 Raw files in CS2..

Hi. Newbie here.

I've recently started shooting in Raw with my Canon 50D. All pics are saved as .CR2 files, but how do I open them in PS CS2 to process?

I've loaded the Adobe Camera Raw 3.7 plugin (the latest version for CS2 apparently), but I get the following error when I try to open >>

"Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document"

I can use Canon's Didgital Photo Professional (camera bundled software to 'convert and save' the CR2 files to TIFF format and then open in CS2, but doesn't this add some processing to the file, thus taking away the 'raw'ness when I open in CS2?

Any help please?

Arjay

I would definitely try to get the RAW issue fixed since when you open the file with CS2, a special RAW editor pops up which will allow you to tweak it in RAW format before opening it up in CS2, which changes it to a PSD file. Changing the file to TIFF then opening it up in CS2 bypasses the RAW editing and there is basically no point to even use the RAW file to begin with....you will lose the "rawness" as you said.

This may sound basic but, did you restart the computer after installing the plug in?

I googled your problem since I never encountered it myself and there is a thread over on the Adobe forum that addresses this issue:

Adobe Forums: Cannot open my raw files in CS2

If that does not help you, I noticed quite a few other hits on google about this, so you are not alone. Search for the following term exactly:

"Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document adobe raw cs2"

Hope this helps.

I think you need a least CS3 to open 50D RAW files directly.

I agree with LoveDSLR. The 50D came out way after CS2 and there is a point where they no longer do updates to ACR for older versions.

I had the same problem with my 450D. So, I use Digital Photo Professional that came with my camera to open the RAW files and make adjustments on exposure, etc., then convert and save to JPG, then make final adjustments in CS2. It's been working out quite well for me.

Thanks all.

I think I like the DNG route. So new questions:

- Can i use any version on DNG for my 50D .CR2's?
- Can I adjust the images in DNG in the same way as with ACR?
- What format do I save the DNG adjusted file and does this result in further processing the same as with converting to JPG, or does the image retain 'rawness' for me to open in PS CS2?

Thanks guys..

I'm having this problem with my 450d too. How can I convert them from CR2 to DNG?

Use the Adobe DNG converter. You can download it it free from their website.
