Default Photoshop Technique Question

I'm wondering if anyone can point me to a thread or tutorial that explains the PP process used below? I've seen a lot of self-portraits using this technique that appears HDR, but they claim they didn't use HDR. Unfortunately, they never explain the process or even give it a name, so I'm having a hard time finding anything on it.

Could be a bit of using high pass sharpening and playing with the shadows / highlights. Not 100% certain though. That would get the extra sharpness and the kind of lack of shadows. Also maybe a bit of desaturation.

Try this: Photoshop Insider Blog By Scott Kelby » Blog Archive » Getting That Cool Gritty Look Right in Camera Raw and Photoshop or Lightroom

I know there are a couple of well known photographers who use this technique, just cannot think of their names.

Found it!!! Dave Hill....do a google on dave hill photography technique and you will find lots of information.
Here is one tutorial: http://www.talk-mania.com/effects-ph...dy-photos.html

I made a LR preset for this look... still requires a step in PS to smooth. Does anyone want it?

I would like it, but I don't have LR or PS. I'm using Gimp and PS Elements, so I'll just use the tutorials as a jumping-off point and figure out the rest through experimentation. Thanks for the offer!

A tip for photoshop users, if you add noise (or any filter) you can push ctrl+shift+f directly after applying the filter to "fade" the filter. For noise I will often apply what at first appears way too much noise and then fade the opacity or change the overlay mode to make it subtler.

Cheers

Here's an example of the above, you'll have to excuse the image, it';s really not ideal for this example, but all I've got on my SD card at the moment.

So I applied filter - noise, set something like 50%-60% gaussian & monchrome. As you can see, it's WAY to much noise!
Then I hit ctrl+shift+f set the blend mode to soft light and the opacity to 80%. As you can see the effect is a lot more subtle and blends nicer than just applying a lower amount of noise in the first place.

Cheers
