Dark prints = Monitor too bright.
Usually monitors are set too bright from the factory for proper photo editing/viewing. Turn it down at least 50%. It will seem strange at first but your eyes will adjust to it. More importantly, you should calibrate the monitor with a calibrating device. There are several different brands. Search for Eye One, Monaco Optix, Colorvision Spider, Pantone Huey, to name a few. Also it is important to use the proper papers and ICC print profiles for your printer.

ALso keep in mind that your monitor shows things in RGB, but printers print in CMYK, which will affect colours and brightness.

I just ordered the Spyder Express off of Amazon for $59. The Pro version has the exact same calibrator you put on the screen as the Express version and if you are google proficient you can find the Pro software to use with the Express calibrator LOL
