Default White on black

I've been trying to capture one of these fellas for a while but they're very nervous and keep legging it when they see me. This is the best I've managed so far despite him starting to run when he saw me.
What bothers me a tad is the white on his head compared to the dark hiding his eye. I'm sure I've seen this situation improved by someone before but can't find the thread. I have CS2 for PP but haven't much knowledge of its workings yet (I'm a novice).
Any advice would be great. Feel free to edit and re-post here.

I made a selection of the head and copied it into a layer. Chaged the layer mode to Linear Dodge (Add). Then to the entire image I did a Brightness/Contrast adjustment, 35% Brightness and 10% Contrast.

Adjusted contrast with a layer, and dodge and burn with a layer ( dup. layer---add white layer---fill layer with med gray(slide value slider to 50%)--set layer to overlay-----dodge and burn selecting black or white with soft brush set to 12% opacity)

Forgot, i also sharpened a bit with unsharpmask.

I was using the free software...............gimp. Also UFRaw (also free). It would turn out alot better if i started with the raw image.

Gimp does a good job ( alot like photoshop without the $700 price tag.) The only disadvantage is it only supports an 8 bit color file. I hear talk it is going to change to 16bit like photoshop, real soon.

If your interested, you can download both for free and learn how to use it at "meet the gimp". There, you will find over 100 video's on different things in gimp.
