Welcome wendii (I just moved this out of the tutorial section and into post-processing because we try to keep the tutorial section for completed tutorials).

Have you tried the tips at the Gimp website?

There are also a lot of Gimp users on the forums, so I'm sure there will be even more tips for you.

What image processing software (if any) have you used before?

Gimp-tutorials.net - Gimp , tutorials , brushes , downloads, forum. has a lot of tutorials once you've looked at the GIMP site's tutorials. I ten to google with GIMp and the effect I am after to find specific tutorials, so I don't have any other particular sites to recommend unfortunately.

I don't have any previous experiece using post- processing tools Wulf.
I have jsut started using Picassa - but that is quite simple.

The tutorial links have been great read so far (at work, and can't do much here).
Can't wait to starting using the tutorials!

In that case, I would say the vital thing to find out about (using all the links given above) is how to use layers. Once you start work with layers and layer masks, you'll wonder how you ever did without it. You can work on a copy of the image (making it easy to compare before and after) and even blend the effect in with translucency (to tone it down) or various layer modes (with all sorts of effects).
