reducing file size - help

I just spent 4 hours resizing, cropping, anything I could think of to reduce the filesize of a picture so I could post to "homework" for this week. I see some fantastically clear, large posts to the folder and the filesizes are in bytes, not KB or MB.

How is that done? I just downloaded the 30-day trial of Lightroom.

I can tell you what I do, crop to 4x6 and dpi 72, when you crop it'll look small but then click on view, fit on screen, so it;ll be "normal" size so you can work on it more. I use cs3...

I'd be surprised to see an image come out at less than 1,024 bytes (ie. 1 KB). It would have to be almost entirely a flat colour to come much over 30px square! Most photos will be small enough to post on this site if you resize them down to 600px on the longest side (the rules for the user gallery say "Maximum File Size per Picture - 97.7 KB; Maximum Picture Dimensions - 600 by 600 Pixels").
