Default PP in RAW vs in jpeg

Did a little comparing using Adobe Lightroom of post processing a RAW image with its jpeg version - set my camera to take RAW+jpeg.

I noticed that the adjust parameters for both types of images in Lightroom is about the same and I could do with the jpeg image what I could do with the RAW image.

Am I missing something here?

What would my advantage be shooting in RAW vs. jpeg?

You can't push the edits quite as far with jpg as you can with raw. Therefor what you can't save in jpg image you might be able to recover with raw.

Suggest you do a search of raw versus jpeg on the forum, there is LOTS of history to this. JPEG does not have the bit depth or raw. A out of the camera jpeg is a raw file that has been post processed by the computer in the camera and then much of the information that it decided was not needed is thrown away and the result is compressed with a method that looses some of the data that it thinks is needed. Thus, you may likely be missing data that you need to get the photo the way YOU want it rather than the way the CAMERA wanted it.

Camera RAW and lightroom fake teh adjustments when adjusting JPEGs rather than RAWs. The sliders look the same but they don't actually make the same change. White balance is the key one here.

Default Better Understood Now

Thanks a lot for all the clarifications.

mclean8's White Balance Follies was quite enlightening - very simple explanation and demonstration.

Now I am better educated in our art.
