Default watermark help

I was reading on how a watermark was very important when displaying photos on the internet. To be honest if someone stole my photo ~ at this point in my photographic endeavors I would be thrilled LOL
It would mean I was at least doing something right

Anyway, I got on my PSP x2 program which you can do watermarks with. I am such a doofus still when it comes to photo editing programs and doing any *fancy* stuff I tried to keep it simply ~ no artistic flares for me

Here is all of my hard work (sad I know but it took me 3 hours to get just this right) DO you think its too big or too distracting? I don't know the first thing about the correct way to display a watermark. I am concerned it might be too big but at the same time I want to make sure it can be seen lol

Does anyone have any helpful advice for watermarks for me? Any and all help would be appreciated but please keep it simple plain talk so you don't lose me~ as I said it took me 3 hours just to do this!

Brooke - I think it looks fine but I also am very curious what other members have to say. I haven't used a watermark yet so I'm definitely not an authority on it. Would you always put your watermark in the same place or is it something you move around depending on your subject?

watermark is a tool to prevent thieves to stole your images. however, since we do have photoshop, that can be erased (by using clone ,cut paste, dodge and burn tools.) for me, i do watermark on my images and i upload images on 800x600 image size or smaller. or i do a super small watermark, so small you have to magnify the image just to see it then place it on the subject, then subtract the opacity...

Praline
A watermark won't protect your work, but maybe deter some, or at least show that its your work.
you have to register a watermark in order to enforce copyright. since that is an expense most of us don't want, then we at least go for the "hey if you steal it without credit, it will be obvious".

now i use watermarks because someone has already taken my efforts without crediting me, also i limit the size for display as raigoki suggested 600 or 500 on the smallest size. I believe the reason for that is because its too small to reprint commercially.

as pointed out. it is easy for anyone with good PSP knowledge to wipe out your watermark, however do it over a complicated area or use an image watermark rather than text and you stand a better chance.

the size of your watermark can depend on the visiblity. the more it blends into a background the bigger it can be.

i use text at the moment and have no complaints( otherwise too bad!) see links below for latest examples. I will hopefully get around to creating am image watermark when I ask a friend who is a professional illustrator, but till then i use a transparent watermark as show in examples

this one below, you may not be able to see if flickr still has the hiccups, if so go to photostream and look for 'sleeping gray' ( hopefully you will see it even at small photo size). I can tell you how to do this if you want ( got it from psp user mag)

try in a similar way to the text

put a bevel effect on it, reduce fill opacity to near 0% to leave an outline. give the glass effect as in my examples

Brook I use watermarks on almost all of my images that I upload. I have had stuff downloaded and used before without my permission. I make them rather transparent so that they don't interfere with the image that much and I try to put them going over points of interest in the photograph but in a way that they don't interfere too much with the image either. Here are some examples;
