Default Help!!! - JPG and RAW file problem

Hi All,

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this. I have been taking photos with my D60 for the past 4months. I always used to shoot in RAW+Basic mode.

Last week I took a snap of tomato and found out this problem. the JPG version created by camera is looking good(rich in red). but the JPG version created from the RAW file is totally different.

Created the JPG from RAW file using photoshop CS4. I have attached both. Can someone please help me in understanding what went wrong?

Thanks a lot
Harry

From what I understand:

Since a JPEG is a file that is processed in your camera, it applied its settings which raised saturation, contrast, and sharpening. The RAW file requires you to process it, so it comes out looking like that and you have to adjust it to your taste. The advantage to RAW is that it doesn't discard all the information it doesn't use, due to compression, which means less room for adjustment. This is nomal, don't freak out.

If all you want to do is "get the original" colorand contrast then why bother shooting raw? What you are saying is that you are happy with the way the camera processes - so why not let it process? Raw gives you the flexibility to make your picture the way you want it rather than the way the camera wants it.

Default Trouble opening RAW files

Can anyone help me with Photoshop Elements 7? When I had a Nikon D60, I never had problems opening RAW files. I have upgraded to Nikon D90 and am unable to open my RAW files. I have looked for updates and can't find anything that helps. Any solutions out there?

You will surely get all kinds of advice regarding RAW files and JPG vs RAW, but take this advice.

Download the trial of Nikon Capture NX 2. This program is a little slow, memory hungry and very different from Photoshop, but it understands Nikons RAW files like NO other program and it supports your camera settings. In other words the post processing done by Capture NX is almost if not identical to the post processing done in your camera. Give it time, it takes time to learn. You can make further enhancements to the pictures very easily and make better JPGs than you camera.

It is a 60 day trial so you have plenty of time. Some people fancy to badmouth Capture NX, but Nikons know how to process RAW files from a Nikon camera better than anyone. The idea that software and camera use the same terms and kind of settings does make things a little easier to understand and does make RAW conversion a lot faster.
