Default HDR...How do I use it?

I've seen some really cool effects achieved by HDR, high dynamic range, but exactly what is it, and what do I need to apply it to some of my pics? I searched Nikon Capture NX and PS Elements, but there were no results for HDR. Thanks.

Hi there,
I am learning about HDR before I have a try and found this useful.

Hope it helps.

Fletch...I agree. Sparingly is the word. It's too artsy-fartsy for me. I've checked out Oneexposure.com (1x.com), and it seems to be the HDR pics that get the accolades. It seems to be more of a contest of Photoshop skills than photography skills. Thanks for the comment.
