Default Size of TIFF files

Maybe a simple/newbie type question, but I haven't worked with TIFF files that much. I primarily work with RAW and then export upload as JPEG.

I am trying out Noise Ninja and it seems I am getting better results using the TIFF files, which makes sense to me since the data is not compressed as it is in JPEG. However, I notice the size of the ~12MB RAW (NEF) file, exports to a 71MB TIFF file using 16bit channels and about 37MB when using 8bit channels.

Is this correct? Should the TIFF be that much larger than the RAW file?

BTW, when I turn compression on when exporting a TIFF, I am only saving a couple of MB per file.

Thx
Bill

The file sizes are about right. Tiff files are fairly large but as you have found out they are also better to work with. If you are using layers this will also affect the size.

Given the size and price of disk space these days tiff is the way to go, at least for processing purposes. The image can then be converted later for other uses.
