I says to start by duplicating the image....right click and select image>mode>decompose When i do that , there is no decompose to choose...............Am i doing something wrong?? I have the newer program downloaded, is there something different i need to choose to get to the same point? Any help will be most appreciated. Thank's |

PrimeTime, that looks like an older tutorial (it's copyright 2002). The command you're looking for is now in Color -> Channels -> Decompose.
Have fun!

Try DIY High Pass Filtering instead. Less steps and I think the result is equal to or better than the smart sharpening idea.

The actual sharpening routine wasn't the only interesting part of that article. The principle of decomposing an RGB image to LAB and sharpening just the 'L' channel is a good one, as it avoids colour shifts in the sharpened image. However, the current limitation in GIMP to 8-bits per channel causes quantisation errors during the RGB->LAB conversion (and also in the LAB->RGB conversion), so be careful with it. When full 16-bit support arrives in GIMP, I'll probably start using this approach again.
