Default Photoshop6 question

Greetings. Just a couple of quick questions regarding Photoshop 6.01. First, am I missing something or am I right when I say that you cannot edit RAW images with this application? Second, I cannot always save files in a JPEG format when using the 'save as' command. Sometimes the JPEG extension option is available, but mostly it is not. Most of the time when I click on the 'save as' command, I get 3 or 4 format options, one of which is 'RAW'. The others seem to be restricted to photoshop files only (ie: 'pdf' 'pdp' 'eps' etc.). It seems that (in most instances) I can only convert to JPEG when I choose the 'save for web' command. Can anyone tell me why this is? Why the JPEG option is only sometimes available?

I'm fairly new to digital photography and post-processing, and so far have used Digital Photo Professional for most of my editing. I forgot that I had an old version of Photoshop (6.01) and thought I'd try to familiarize myself with it a little. In DPP, the file extensions for RAW images are 'CR2' (I believe). Is this propriety to DPP? 'Cause in Photoshop the file extension for RAW images seems to be 'RAW'. Also, Photoshop does not allow me to import a RAW (CR2) image from DPP - why?. Lastly, I had read somewhere that in processing RAW images, it was beneficial to convert the final product to a 16bit TIFF file opposed to JPEG. However, when I try this the TIFF image's colors seem to be way off. Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You cannot use Raw files with that version, I think it was from CS onwards that Camera Raw was introduced.

When you cannot save as a jpg or the option is not available check under Image>Mode and see if the file is 16 or 8 bit, it must be 8 to save as jpg. If it is 16 bit then save it as a tiff, much better and you can save layered documents.

Your second paragraph I am have a bit of trouble understanding and have never worked with DPP so maybe someone else can answer that.

.CR2 Is a proprietary format used by Canon, it's Canons RAW format. Photoshop versions that early will not process RAW Files. It will not let you import .CR2 files because it simply cannot read Canons file format. You would have to convert the file to a .Tiff in DPP before you import it to Photoshop. It sucks, but you gotta do whatcha gotta do.
