I use PSP, just what are you trying to do? Do you have an example?
There are a couple ways of layering, well actually quite a few. You can paste a new layer on top of the orginal layer and use a mask to paint out areas you dont want. If you arent familiar with masks, what you can do is use your erase tool and erase areas on the top layer that you dont want. You can adjust the erasure tools opacity to adjust the amount your erase. I usually will lower the opacity of the entire layer I am working on so I can see what is below. You can also use your blending tools. Overlay will create a neat effect. as will dissolve. I'm happy to help if you need it.

..so ive been told to use a layering effect on a couple of my photos, but the one that im dealling with right now has this darker corner. it was taken in a moving car, down the freeway, i dont know what it is but there was something in the way. and i wanna get rid of it! i already have a thread on it, but i just wasnt getting the answers i needed..other than that i needed to use layer. but have no idea where to start. is there an option that says straight "layering"? fyi- this image has been shrpened as well but for some reason it wont let me upload my edited images, it always puts the originals...

if its just a small object you can either crop your inage down further or use your clone tool. can you post the image so I can see what you are talking about?

I'm not so sure i would use anything to layer on top of that. Its an easy fix. Unless you are wanting an entirely new background.
To make sure you dont "paint" over the pole, you'll want to use your lasso tool. Set it on find edge and draw around the rectangle area on that same side of the pole. This will keep your "cloning" within that selected area. Click on your clone tool. 0 hardness and size it to a little smaller than the area on that side of the pole. right click to choose an area that you want to use as the cover up. Then right click on the darker areas until you are satisfied with the blend. You may have to keep going back and right clicking on an area to get the effect that you want. Make sure you have continous checked at the top of the page as well. I'll try and play with it when I get home to show you just what I mean.

In this case I'd just make new layer on top of the original, brush some white on the darker area and set the layer to "screen" blending mode.
Made animated gif of it: <-- click the imageI also added curves adjustment layer and brightness/contrast on top of the "screen" layer. Was this what you were looking for?
