Elay: Too funny about the crop... and isn't doing the section bit a pain in the butt?

Firemaine: I'll start out with nicely selected I like it on the clouds with the text, totally fits your idea.

Teewinot: What can I say, impressed as usual. The cake now screams that it's a dark temptation.

Who's next?

Thanks, everyone...I had fun with this one!

ELAY, I have you to thank for tipping me off (in a different thread) to the power of the unsharp mask for local contrast enhancement...

Saralonde, I too wondered how food could possibly work in black and white, but I'm on a black and white 'kick' this week, so I really wanted to try it!

And as Nicole stated....who's next???

Cake

Short of putting a new cake in the photo, I wasn't sure what else would make it appealing. So I thought of menu photos and packaged food. The cake stand is too large, and the cake is dull, so that was the goal: make it look bigger and more inviting.

Selecting is important, because there are four separate layers.
-Cake is sharpened, contrasted, brightened, decorations lowered into icing.
-Both sections of cake stand are desaturated, lightened, contrasted.
-Top of stand is resized horizontally to fit cake.
-Background is shaded just to off-white, ovals are added, darkened for shadows.
-Drop shadow added, menu-pink border with green accent

Four honeybuns later . . . it's still a funky cake.

As usual, Jim was who I was referring to when noting that others had much more patience than me when doing selections around objects... and you've shown it quite well And I never noticed how much larger the platter was than the cake until you showed your edit Jim. Looks good

Nicole, Thanks

As usual, you say nice things. When I look for it, there's something in every photo that will make a difference if changed or eliminated.

Teewinot, Thanks

We all get there in different ways. Ever see those termite mounds, huge, solid, seemingly impossible to imagine how they get built? Determination, magic with work behind it. Bet termites set a goal first, too.

I completely forgot it was WWYD day yesterday. I did horrible with this picture - that's why I sent it in.

wulf- I agree, the background could be whiter, also, the glare on the cake and stand could be cut down.

Nicole- I really like the crop you did, although the cake is washed out a little.

Firemaine- I really like that idea! Although I cheated... I bought this from the store.

Teewinot- I love the colors!

jiminyClickit- I like how you made the cake bigger and the stand smaller. I also like how you cloned out the background.

That's all I've got to say for now... I'm on vacation.
