Default iPhoto adjustments won't stick

I was messing around with a image today in iPhoto resulting in the following image:

When I clicked on the 'Done' button, this was the result you saw in the viewing pane without 'Edit' invoked:

I realize this may well be better addressed in an Apple forum, but has anyone here that uses iPhoto run across this? This image I worked upon is a duplicate of the original. The changes I made with the Adjust tool were: Exposure 0.68; Contrast -100; Highlights 12.0; Shadows 17.0.

Perhaps, its time to take a more serious look a Adobe's offerings?

My gripe with iPhoto is that it doesn't crop completely accurately - if I try and get a square picture it is often a pixel off on one of the sides! I haven't had the issue you are describing though.

Two questions:

1. Which version of iPhoto and Mac OS X?

2. Have you managed to get any changes to stick?

1) iPhoto v7.1.3; OS 10.4.11

2) Yes. This is the first time I've run into this problem ever!

Hmmnn... try again? You might even find that the picture is now updated - sometimes iPhoto takes more than the blink of an eye to update its image cache.

You know what? I did exactly that before your initial reply. I deleted the copy, again duplicated, then made my changes with the 'Adjust' tool. However, I did C&P the changes instead of setting them manually. Perhaps one more go before heading to the Apple forums or giving up.

Its odd, though. You can see iPhoto apply the "mask" of how I want the photo to look just after you expand the image and click the 'Edit' button.

As an aside, what other photo editing solutions should I take a look at? I have GIMP installed upon my machine, but am not at all above paying for one of Adobe's solutions. I'm not yet into hardcore editing or PP, but would like to be someday.

Thanks for your replies, BTW.

I use iPhoto for receiving and storing my photos. I load them off the camera, apply a few tags (mainly technical data, such as lens and, if a manual lens, aperture) and take advantage of the fullscreen mode to compare shots side by side and gradually whittle each session down to a smaller number of shots that I want to keep.

Occassionally I use iPhoto to adjust the photos but most of the time I will fire up The Gimp, which I have set as the default external editor. This combination works well for me.

I'll need to commit to learning GIMP, honestly. I just don't have the bones for Photoshop. I'm also not sure that Creative Elements will leverage anything more for me than using iPhoto.

Another aside concerning EXIF data: I've used a few 3rd party "free" image editors, such as ImageWell and Skitch. Both have destroyed EXIF data after resizing or editing. Does GIMP well preserve the EXIF data of an image exported from iPhoto?

I've not had a problem with my shots (see all my Gimp-processed photos on Flickr - they all have EXIF data shown in "More Properties" down the right hand side).

Thanks for your feedback, Wulf.

I've left the original issue in the hands of the Apple Support Forums.

We'll see if it can be resolved there or not.

Hail Mary passes, but did you try repairing permissions in Disk Utility? Or rebuilding the iPhoto Library?
