You my friend have a registry corruption issue. In the registry one of your file type association groups has been damaged or corrupted. Go to this link and read up. You may need a registry repair program or not if you are pretty savvy.

Well, I used a registry repair program, and the problem persists. Now, in addition to the Type: 8 Files, I'm also getting Type: 5 Files. Any more suggestions out there? They'll be greatly appreciated.

Format the drive and start over. Once you've got that kind of registry issues, you're likely going to have more trouble than it's worth.

don't know if this will solve the problem, but you may want to remove, and re-install photoshop..just make sure your license will allow a second installation. If you can do this, use the Add/Remove utility, or if photoshop has it's own removal tool, use that. Good luck

You could try to just rename the file with the correct extension. That will tell if it's actually been written/stored wrong (as a type8) or if it's just being erroneously identified.
Been a while since I messed with windows, but I used to like Ccleaner ("crap cleaner"). I would try the windows registry repair program especially if you are not versed with regedit. If that doesn't work you could reinstall windows over itself, but this seldom fixes bad entries...I believe there was a way to rename/replace your registry file with the original first installed version (reg.old?) and then reinstall to get it to overwrite...But at that point you are only a couple steps from wiping/reinstalling everything.

Thanks for all your responses. I really don't know what the problem is. I tried that Windows registry repair program, and I'm still getting those funny files. But I noticed that this is happening only with the RAW files I took yesterday. If I work with an old RAW file, I can save it, and it's saved as a PSD File. Not as a Type: 8 File or Type: 5 File.
So, any ideas out there as to what the problem might be? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Try a couple new RAW files. Maybe the registry repair worked and just those files are corrupt.

While it may be an issue with your photoshop program and its RAW converter utility, I don't think so. But the reinstall suggestion is a good one.
I agree with Osmosis, you may be best to back up all your existing data and reinstall windows. And Steve's theory is a good one as well. |
