Default Colours not the same after uploading?

Hi guys,

I'm having a strange problem that I haven't had before, and it's driving me nuts.

Photos come out of my camera and go straight into lightroom where I do most of my post work. Sometimes they go into photoshop for more work too. Anyway, once I'm done, I'm happy, and then I upload the shots.

Now, I don't know if I'm imagining it, but the colours just aren't the same when I've uploaded the photos. I've found this especially visibly in the greens. I just finished this shot:

Now, what I see in this post is not what I made. The greens in this photo are a little more yellow than they were in photoshop. It's not a HUGE difference, but it's a difference nonetheless. In fact, now that I look at it, it looks like an overall desaturation. His skin was a little more red and less dead looking in the edit I finished up. Here's a side by side comparison of the image I have and what it looked like after upload:

It also doesn't matter where I upload to. Whether it's photobucket or Dropbox, I still see it. Now like I said, it's not a massive difference, but it's a difference, and I don't want it. Any ideas as to what's going on?

Thanks!

Even if you work in sRGB (and you really should), uploading the photo to the web means youre looking at it through a browser; different browsers have different rendering engines, and your image, even from the same link, will look drastically different in different browsers.

Alright, I see. Thanks

So you say I should be working in sRGB, right? Should I be there from my camera too? My camera is shooting in Adobe RGB - so should I have my images start in sRGB?

Wait a sec. What's the cause of the images looking different on my phone, then? I mean, I've got these photos on my iPhone and iPad, and the colours are still off. What's causing that?

Again different rendering engine, but the screens themselves are very different too.

Another issue is most photo site compress your images for storage. Combine this with the compression already in an uploaded image some of the data will be lost or misinterpreted in the processes. This s the reason an image often appears different between sites.

Are you shooting RAW or jpeg, cause this will make a difference. RAW files have no color space applied until you process them. This means it does not matter what color space you have your camera set to. Jpeg will have the color space you have your camera set to applied.

If you only intend on uploading your photos to the web, then srgb is fine, though LR does work in the ProPhoto color space. I have found, and have heard from other professionals, that it is best to work all the way through as ProPhoto and only convert to srgb when uploading to the web.

If you are going from LR to PS, you can sertup PS to work in the ProPhoto color space. It is important to try not to worry about how images appear online. Though it would be nice to have your images look perfect online, the fact that so many people do not have calibrated monitors coupled with the fact that different browsers render differently make it incredibly difficult.
