Default Lightroom and PSE9??

I have recently downloaded Lightroom for a 30 day trial, so am learning as I go. I only have PSE9, and wonder if they work well together - most of the videos refer to Photoshop CS, and not Elements. If I try to open an image in PSE, I always get the welcome screen first, and not Edit, which is what I want. Then, the image does not seem to open directly. I can export an image to the desktop from Lr, and then open with PSE9, but this seems very laborious. What am I doing wrong?

For me, and I do have both, I need to make sure PSE is open and on the edit screen before I send the photo to be edited. I find Lightroom to be more than adequate for my needs at this time and don't send many to be edited by PSE, but that's my personal taste (and I'm not THAT good yet).
