Default pixils to inches

Ok, all you wonderful experts. I am a newbie and really need some help. I have a photo that is 4313 x2886 pixils. I want to print at 11x17 inches. I want to be able to put this print in a standard frame that I don't have to custom make a mat for. And, sometimes when I try to resize to the size I want, it squeezes the photo so it's too narrow. It's a landscape photo. Help!! Can someone tell me how to resize this to 11x17 inches? Also, any tutorials on this would be appreciated. I have Elements 7 to resize. Step by step directions would be a lifesaver! Thanks, lots!

The problem I suspect you're having is that you're trying to fit a 2x3 aspect ratio image into an 11x17 aspect ratio box. They're not the same shape.

So:

1) Open the image.

2) Select the crop tool from the tools palette.

3) Set the width to 17" and the height to 11". Leave the resolution information blank.

4) Click and drag the crop box across the photo. The box will not be the same shape (aspect ratio) as the photo. Select the part of the photo that you want to print.

5) Press Enter.

6) Save image in your preferred image format.

Assuming the short side stays the same (likely), you're at 263 pixels for every inch; so you're okay.

Just to bore the pants of you, as everyone else has answered everything else so it may as well be my job to bore you haha

Heres an example of PPI in action

Our eyes or I shall say an average persons eye can resolve details at 0.1mm from 30cm away assuming theres enough contrast between the two pixels.

So your image at 4313 x 2886 = 263 ppi which is 0.097 mm per pixel which is below the 0.1mm

Printing 11x17 @ 1650 x 2550 = 150 ppi would give 0.169 mm per pixel which is over what the average person can resolve but in a normal scene where gradiants are smooth you wouldnt really notice.

Its just an example that PPI can be overkill for what you actual notice. I may as well completely bore you and say that this is all related to a smooth photo paper once texture is introduced the amount we can resolve decreases so lower PPIs could be used.
