Default Which version of Photoshop do you use?

Hello everyone,

Christmas is coming and my mom has asked me to make a wish list. One item on the list is Photoshop. I originally asked for Lightroom because it seems that's the one best for photos and it looks like it's very popular in the DPS community. Well Costco has Photoshop Elements 10 and Premiere Elements 10 together for $124 (Canadian dollars), so my mom asked me if that was OK. I really have no idea what the difference is in any of these photoshops. Can you guys offer any advise?

Elements is very nice. There are parts of full-blown Photoshop that aren't included (Curves adjustments, CMYK support, for example). For most purposes, Elements will work just fine.

That said, for my workflow, I'd try to get Lightroom. (FWIW, I've seen it on sale several times recently for 50% off, which brings it down close to the price you're talking about.) For the reasons, search for the many threads on comparing LR and PS.

Note, though, that LR is not a pixel-level editor, so if that's what you need to do, don't get LR.

it's also worth looking at the Adobe website at the student editions, which are heavily discounted

Thanks for the reply!

I'm new to post production and I looked at a few tutorials, I think it's Lightroom that I'd like. Thanks for mentioning the student discount, I'm in university so I'm eligable for that and it brings the price down a lot!

Premiere Elements is a video editor. Unless you're mucking with video, you don't need that (and the last I heard, it wasn't a fan favorite anyway). If you sneak across the border, Amazon US is peddling Photoshop Elements 10 for US$49.99 at the moment.

If you are still in school definitely check online about the academic discounts.
