This explains it much more quickly and concisely than I could:
Aspect Ratio Basically, the aspect ratio is wrong. Standard photo sizes aren't proportional. Your pictures will fit a 4x6 just fine, but anything else you're going to have to crop. Personally, I prefer to NOT crop, but instead, just letterbox it (that is, make it 10" wide, and let the height scale proportionally). Then, just trim the sides. Other than standard frame sizes, there's no reason to limit yourself to these de facto standard print sizes.
