Angry Photo Resizing

Why is it that when I try to re size my photos from my canon they don't fit normal photo sizes like 8x10 or 5x7? I end up having to crop the sides.

Why is this and is there any way to fix it?

Thanks!

This explains it much more quickly and concisely than I could:

Aspect Ratio

Basically, the aspect ratio is wrong. Standard photo sizes aren't proportional. Your pictures will fit a 4x6 just fine, but anything else you're going to have to crop. Personally, I prefer to NOT crop, but instead, just letterbox it (that is, make it 10" wide, and let the height scale proportionally). Then, just trim the sides. Other than standard frame sizes, there's no reason to limit yourself to these de facto standard print sizes.
