Processing Software?

Sorry if this is a repeat, I'm not having any luck with the site and forum searches (wrong keywords, maybe?)

I'm looking for reviews/recommendations for photo processing. I'd like to be able to do basic processing as well as fancier tricks with layering and such. I used to use Macromedia Fireworks, but it's a bit out-dated by now (my copy is probably 10 years old...).
