I "grew up" with Paint Shop software over the years, I currently have Paint Shop Pro X, and I haven't felt the need to update yet. I also have Photoshop C2, which I am still learning. I use both of these programs, depending on what result I need.

I have also tried The GIMP, and I think it is actually an amazing program for being free. There's no reason not to start out with that, especially when you could instead invest that money on equipment.

Default Another alternative

It sounds like all the obvious things about Gimp vs. PS have been brought up.

Another alternative I have used is called Paint.Net.

http://www.getpaint.net/index.html

I am no PS expert by any means, although I do have a copy and have used it. I find Paint.Net easier to use than PS. It just seems more intuitive TO ME.

It is for Win only (sorry Mac!). I would love to hear any feedback regarding "PS vs. Paint.Net" from members have have played with it.

Cheers,
Paul

Default Gimp and Mac OSx

Hi,

I (try to) use GIMP, mainly because I'm a firm believer in Open Source code. I am a newbee just like you, and find that it is not that intuitive, i.e. it takes some effort to get started.
I have also had some undesired side effects running on Mac OS 10.5, however, whether this is Mac or GIMP I'll let the experts talk about. Anyway, I ended up with a 50GB GIMP file - until the harddisk was full.
Despite my initial struggles with GIMP I'll keep on trying, and keep my money for some new prime lenses.

Wow, I've gotten some really good feedback here. I've been experimenting a bit with GIMP, found somethings I like, some things I don't. I'm still weighing my options. At least until budget allows, I'll continue to use GIMP. Perhaps once I don't have other things to purchase (does that ever happen?) I'll be proficient at GIMP, who knows.

Thank you everyone.

i used gimp for a week or so...got photoshop, it is much better....for advanced editing atleast...for very basic things, gimp can get the job done...maybe not as well as PS but enough...for more advanced things like other color spaces etc. PS rules all.

you can always download the 30 day trial from adobe and check it out and then talk to me...;-)

Default Suprised

I'm suprised, not a single post favoring PS over The Gimp, I was going to buy PS Elements but I'm reviewing my decision.

Not quite true - Aperture Nine was very pro-PS.

I wasn't quite convinced though. It might be the case for some applications but, despite having some PS experience, I think The Gimp is as good as anything for my general requirements (various techniques to add a bit more punch, judged by eye to fit the image in question).
