Thanks Aaron.

I've installed Gimp and went through a few other tutorials I've found. It definitely looks promising so far. Thank you everyone!

i've tried using gimp a few times, but i guess photoshop has become the proverbial extension of my photographic imagination... but for an open source software, it is awesome.

how do you figure? Microsoft is the industry standard for desktop computing, but it's not the best... not by a long shot. Just because a corporation's marketing department can get it's product to the #1 spot doesn't necessarily mean it belongs there.

You should take a look at http://gimpguru.org and gimp's online documentation.

I have tried both photoshop and gimp and both of them are overwhelming at first. I put lots more time into photoshop, so it is my preference right now. I could probably get around in gimp with my photoshop skills, but not proficient. If you more time into gimp, your knowledge will grow with experience.

My suggestion: if you know nothing about either software, I'd go with gimp to save you the money.

I've been playing around all evening in GIMP. I'm pretty pleased with my results so far considering I'm an inexperienced photographer who knows next to nothing about image manipulation.

I'll keep cranking away, you have to start somewhere right?

Thanks everyone!

There are a ton of GIMP tutorials here , and here.

I'm sure there are tons more. Just google, GIMP Tutorials and you'll probably get thousands of pages. The ones from Pixel2Life (the 2nd Link) are pretty good.

And, BTW, I agree with everyone here that while GIMP may not have all of the features PS has, it is free and it can probably do most of what PS can do. And of course, it's free.

It's not that one is better or worse than the other (apart from the free thing) it's that they do the same things differently and I found it hard to even try and switch.

BTW I have started writing a book on GIMP designed for photographers and aimed at people that have just started all the way up to writing scheme scripts for it.
When will that book be ready and where can we snag a copy?

No idea when it will be finished, I have only just started. You will be able to get a copy from several sources:

1. A web site that will have cross links between the sections,
2. A PDF, I might be able to cross link it, have not tried yet,
3. A Print On Demand service like Lulu.

In keeping with being based on FOSS, the first 2 will be freely available to anyone that wants it. If you can get Lulu (I may use someone else) to send you a free physical copy then let me know.

I will be releasing sections as I go and I have written the majority of the first section. I will let you know when it is a bit more polished and available as a PDF.
