Default Not enough RAM for content aware fill ?!

Hi,

over the weekend, I upgraded to Photoshop CS5, which has been incredibly daunting, but I've already been impressed how much more can be done.

I got the Scot Kelby book on CS5, and was trying out one of his tutorials with a content-aware fill. I didn't have enough memory to do it all in one go!

I have 4 GB RAM- how much do I need?!? I have a 500D camera, and work with 15 MP RAW files

thanks
r0b

Well I think it is more than just how much RAM, but how it is used and what processor you have. If you have intergrated graphics it steals ram from the motherboard as opposed to a dedicated GPU on a separate card that has its own memory. Its also a function of how many, and what, other programs you have running, how big your swap file is, etc.... What does Adobe say as far as minimum requirements?

The minimum is 1 GB, so I'm well above that; having said that, I do have an integrated graphics card, which can use up to 1.7 GB (I think!). I'm running it on Windows 7, if that makes a difference. I might have to look into changing the size of the swap file....

There might be some memory leaking going on, because I was able to do the fill on one image after a fresh reboot and changing to 8 bit depth; before I reset, I was not even able to do the fill for 8 bits at full size.

Thanks for the response

I've actually encountered the same issue and I have 4GB of RAM too. This is due to the fact that the Photoshop application is low on memory. To mitigate this problem you can run the purge command, this deletes the states/history from the "undo buffer" and frees up memory. Caution should be taken though, because once you run the purge, you can't undo it.

I used to get that error but i read on another forum how to fix it. In photoshop go to Edit, preferences then performance. I changed the default (can't remember what it was) to 1196 in the "Let Photoshop use MB box. Just above that mine says Available RAM: 1685 MB.

My pc has 2.93 GB of ram so i have lots of ram but i did get that error until i made the change in photoshop...

Thanks guys, those suggestions were very helpful. I've changed the performance settings, and it seems to be working now
