Default Gimp help

I am trying to combine a couple pictures in Gimp (for a school project, not related to photography). I have the pictures i need in layers, all masked, and all resized. But I just can`t figure out how to move the pictures to arrange it the way I need.
I tried selecting it and just moving it, but it just leaves the picture, and duplicates the selection.
Any ideas??
TIA!

Resize your canvas so it is much larger than the pictures. Select the photo you want to move and then cut it (cntrl-X) instead of moving it. Paste it (cntrl-v) and it will be floating. After you position it, it will be a floating selection. Remember to anchor it.

That's an awkward way to do it. If they are in layers then all you need to do is:
  1. Select the layer you want to move*
  2. Activate one of the selection tools (doesn't matter which one)
  3. Make sure there is nothing selected (Ctrl + Shift + A)
  4. Use your arrow keys to move the layer about**.
*If you want to move the mask and not the photo then select the mask, selecting the photo moves both it and the mask.
**If you want it to jump in steps instead of single pixels hold down Shift.

In the latest stable release (im using the portable version from portable apps) theres a move tool it look like a cross hair just click that and on the layer you wish to move.... just click and move moves the layer mask too. Like someone else mentioned you may want to increase the canvas size

RAW processing is not normally handled by GIMP, it is usually handled by a program such as UFRaw. You can however configure GIMP to spawn UFRaw, UFRaw will process the file, send the result back to GIMP and close itself down. It's easier than starting UFRaw, processing the file, saving it, closing UFRaw and then opening the file in GIMP.

It's been a while since I played with RAW files so I have forgotten the exact steps to set it up like that, I just know it can be done.
