Default Quick Mask help please

Hi

I am trying to follow a tutorial on applying and using the quick mask feature in Photoshop CS4. For what ever reason, it seems that the opposite of what is supposed to happen when i apply the mask and when i attempt to edit the image occurs. i get the red colour when i apply the mask after making my selection, then when i try and edit the unprotected portion of the image, that is the part of the image not 'red' or protected by the mask, the opposite occurrs, the part that is red is altered!. when i try and add or subtract from the mask usingthe white or black colour, the opposite occurrs...
Any help is appreciated

..Thanks

Totally confused !!

you can also inverse the selection...after painting your mask and returning to the marching ants choose "select" from the top menu then "inverse. At least thats what it sound like you are attempting to do...
