Default What do u read from this historgram?

Hi all,

I'm wondering about how people see photos and what the impact is from using a certain monitor and whether or not it's calibrated (and how well).

Here's a histogram of a certain photo which I don't want to show, at least for now.

Would you say that you can deduct from this historgram if any parts of the photo is OE or UE?

Thanks,
Mats

Nothing peaked at the far right or the far left so you don't have any unrecoverable OE/UE (clipping). It also says there are more dark tones than light.

Also, there is a lot of blue in the darker parts of the image. Cold shadows? It doesn't give anything valuable without the context of the picture though. It could equally be a sun-kissed beach scene with a polarised effect, so the sky is dark blue while everything else is bright and warm.

BTW, check the FAQ for how to show the picture from Flickr directly in your post here.

I can tell you the image is going to be fairly dark, with a fair bit of navy blue hues.

Thank you all for you inputs.

This is the photo:

We have had a group discussion about the face being UE or not.

Regards,
Mats

Just because the histogram says the shot isn't underexposed doesn't mean that portions of it might not be.
I'm personally having a hard time seeing detail in your subject's face.

I'm surprised that the image isn't bluer in the shadows. Overall, it appears to have a predominance of green although I suppose there is also a lot of yellow (a mix of red and green light), which could explain why the red and green parts of the histogram are very similar. Above all, it shows how little a histogram means without the context of the picture.

The biggest problem on the model's face is that it has a very low contrast range. If you took a histogram reading of just her face , I expect all the energy would be contained in a fairly small area round the middle. That isn't always a problem but, in this shot, it looks unfavourable compared to the glow the backlit sunflowers.
