Default Loosing EXIF Data

I have searched for information on my problem to no avail.

Is there a way to preserve the EXIF data when cropping an image in CS5?

When I want to crop an image I use the square marque tool to cut the desired portion of the original image, then create a "new" image and paste the cut into that.

...Is there another way, in order to retain the EXIF data?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Before doing anything else make a copy of the image. then open the image in cs5 then just crop the work image and exif will remain.

As a general note never work on an orig image only on a copy.

Your way of cropping sounds more complex than it has to be. You can just use the cropping tool (the icon looks like this). If you want a square, you just keep Shift pressed while you're cropping and release it after you've released the mouse. Then you can adjust the crop and when you're satisfied, just press Enter.
Or you can do what you've done before but instead of cutting it to a new image, go to Image > Crop.

And yes, always always edit only copies!! I have had a few occasions when I haven't liked the old edit anymore but the original was nowhere to be found anymore cos I had edited the original photo instead of a copy.

You're not actually cropping: you're creating a new image using a section of another.

Use the crop tool. Save or Save As.
