Default CS3 action problem

I dont use photoshop very often except for some actions I like. But, a few of the action I have will give me an error message in the middle of the process that I'm pretty sure is not allowing it to complete the action to the desired effect.
What it does it will say something to the effect that layer 1, or something like the object history state is not available.
Is there something in preferences I'm missing or is the action I downloaded missing something?

It may be the action step, is not suitable for the image you are working on.
An example
I almost always use one(s) I have recoded myself and if the action says to save the file as a jpg and the file is in 16 bit form then it will bomb out.

Yep that's because the person who recorded the action selected layer with specific name at one step and you might not have the same layer... or something along those lines. Open the actions panel and you can take a look what's "inside" each action.

With out having the action file is impossible to know why. Like others have said you will have to look at all the steps in the action script and reverse engineer them to figure out how you need to setup your image before you run the action. Even having a certain layer selected before you start an action can effect the outcome on the action.

If you care to send me the action script I can figure out what's going on. Are you running it on a file with just a single layer or are there multiple layers and adjustment layers in your psd file before you run the script?
